And I got to help make something pretty cool, so I’ve got no complaints."

Dossier

Name:
Evelyn "Evie" Michelle Wolfe
Age:
28
Appearance:
Evelyn stands at around five foot five, with shoulder length, black hair, that lightens into exposure-bleached white tips. She possesses something of a slight build, perpetually underweight, with slender, fairly long arms and legs in relation to her height. A set of green eyes are framed in a freckled, tanned face, which typically remains locked to a stoic, neutral expression - features passed on by her mother, a first generation Filipino immigrant. Among other things, her most defining feature would be her wardrobe, barely developed since her time in University, and comprised wholly of casual wear, completely unlike the majority of her colleagues.
Personality:
In terms of personality, it, too, appears to have barely progressed since her university course. Even then, she retained her same, dry brand of humour she uses to this day, though to perhaps an even greater extent. She is work focused, and driven, to the point of obsession over her tasks, menial or otherwise. With her Anomaly in tow, actually completing the projects she has to work on has become easier than other, but that productive increase only serves the further her drive, developing from a desire to complete, to a desire to complete en mass. If she can do it, she will do, which plays into her curiosity. Easily can she become fascinated with new concepts, new ideas, even if, or perhaps even more so, if they are unusual or outlandish. This vaguely childish idealisation of her job, and her power, has, on occasion, caused less than favourable run ins with her peers, and her eccentrics in workspace cleanliness and organisation make her a less than ideal colleague.
History:
Born on August 15th 2013 in the Philippines, Evelyn spent a number of her early years in the country, until her divorced mother immigrated to the United Kingdom, bringing her daughter with her. The two lived in Exeter, in a flat for cheap, while Evelyn's mother worked three jobs merely to keep their lifestyle afloat. In the end, very little occurred during Evelyn's childhood, except the fact that she was a genius. She passed through Primary, Secondary, and her Sixth Form with ease, blitzing her way into a place at Oxford in the year of 2031. For the most part, her Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses too were uneventful, except for her friend, Samantha Burgess. Having met in their first year as dorm and course mates, the two hit it off and became inseparable, to the point that they entered into the same PhD course. Until The Equinox, any moment not spent working on their own individual Thesis was spent with the other. A lot of the mechanical success in Evelyn's own paper was owed to Sam's connections and assistance, especially in regards to a number of the virtual renders and simulations. When The Equinox struck, Evelyn herself was almost completely unaffected. She woke up with nothing extraordinary occurring within or around her. Everything appeared fine, except for one thing. Samantha, over the course of a long night of working, left their shared apartment for a moment of reprieve, and was killed in an accident involving a newly awakened individual. Evelyn was devastated, but the world changed more rapidly than she could process. The University closed down in response to The Equinox, on orders from the British Government, and she was swept into the roil of new world bureaucracy, as the nations of the world scrambled to adapt to their new way of life. Incapable of analysing her Anomaly during her Processing, Evelyn was passed among research units, until she landed in the city of Vorpool. The Central Hospital possessed one of the few, newly created ARCs, Anomaly Research Centres, and she was sectioned involuntarily until they could come to a significant conclusion on the details of her Anomaly. It took months of testing and experimentation, but eventually they came to their conclusion - that her Anomaly was one to make the impossible possible. The power to intuitively create advanced technologies from outdated ones. Eventually she was discharged, but the work performed at the ARC left an impression on her. In memory of Samantha, she returned and completed her Thesis, and obtained her PhD, but chose not to pursue a career in the same field. Instead, Evelyn found her way back to Vorpool, and in the Spring of 2039, was brought on as a member of their research team. Her Anomaly would have been invaluable in any industry, but to the research of abilities, she was more than that.

Quintessence

Societal Risk Classification:
Beta
Database Entry:

I apologise for the abruptness of this email, however I thought it pertinent to update you on the situation regarding the case being sent through to your department, UCI-K3387. Her Processing statistics did not appear exceedingly unstable, nor what the typical classifications would regard as threatening, but a degree of uncertainty appears to have surfaced around the voracity of that procedure in her specific case, and as such, she is being directed to your team for additional screening. Doctor O'Brien from the Processing unit that dealt with her case offered little evidence as to the state of her power, and according to their notes, she was transferred between two additional units to reconfirm his initial findings. Due to this, the dossier provided, by Doctor O'Brien's own words, will be significantly lacking in Anomaly data. Having looked over the statistics themselves I can confirm that the abnormal data in response to their power expression stimulus should be an anomalous result, if not for the fact that it has been confirmed three times over. Ordinarily, I would be sceptical even after three repeat assessments, however the contents of the data is, on its own, concerning, and should it truly beyond the scope of standard Processing procedure, it would be better to take care of the assessments ourselves, as early as possible, to mitigate future, similar cases. Attached below is a copy of the statistics and expression data alone, so that you have a chance to check the findings for yourselves while the full dossier is processed by the hospital. I have taken the liberty of highlighting some of the more pressing concerns with the data, though a clean copy can also be found in the folder, so that you may make your own notes. Thank you for your time, and good luck with this one. Sincerely, Doctor Simon Rivers.

Processing Assessment for Evelyn Wolfe, 25 Processing and Power Expression initially conducted by Doctor Samuel O'Brien. Additional screening conducted by Doctor Abigail Smith and Doctor Michael Luscombe. Expression Type: External, Manipulation Expression Resistance: Positive Expression Instability: Negative Specific Output: Incredibly High Destructive Output: Low Reading Resistance: Positive Biological Type: Unconfirmed Elemental Type: Unconfirmed Spatial Type: Unconfirmed Other Type: Unconfirmed Type Subset: Unconfirmed Output Type: Unconfirmed Effective Output: Unconfirmed Notes: Initial expression attempts were met with resistance. EEG confirmed this resistance was unconscious, and Doctor Turner's belief that the Anomaly itself is providing resistance to expression appears to be the correct one. Addendum #1: Under the circumstance, we have chosen to forego typical Processing procedure, and have our Reader generate the statistics first. We hope this will give an insight into dampening the resistance, so the expression stimuli can go unimpeded. Addendum #2: The Reader's first attempt was met with resistance in much the same calibre as the expression was. However, the second attempt was successful, and the statistics were generated somewhat successfully. Instability is low, and most readings appear fairly normal, except for their extraordinarily high Specific Output Intensity. Problematically, the Reading produced no legible Anomaly overview. Typically we would find each Reading to create a simple observation of the Anomaly's scope, to be paired with the expression data to create a full profile on their power. This Reading only detailed that it was a Kinetic Type. Without any of the other data, we will be unable to create the dossier necessary for her to return to civilian life. Addendum #3: It has been suggested that these results are anomalous, and despite continuing failed expressions and Readings, I have been advised the transfer the individual to another unit for additional screening. In the future, these notes will be updated and written by Doctor Michael Luscombe. Addendum #4: Primary, secondary, and tertiary expression attempts resulted in failure. Team believes contrary to the previous unit's conclusion - the chance of an Anomaly like this possessing expression shielding is incredibly unlikely. To clarify the issue, we are calling in Dr. Abigail Smith. Her reading ability is one of the most accurate in the world. Addendum #5: Results unconfirmed. Expression stimuli briefly worked in conjunction with with a reading, but it did not last long enough for a full manifestation before the resistance increased. First observation, though, is the failure of electrical and mechanical equipment in the patient's room. Light bulbs went out and, despite lacking any external or internal damage, cannot be reused. The EEG produced some vivid, and interesting, but unusable, pieces of data, but it too no longer functions. Doctor Smith, through her reading, has come to the conclusion that this Anomaly must be related to the operation of mechanical devices in some way. Addendum #6: Attempts at replicating the previous findings have failed. The expression resistance has doubled, potentially tripled, since last attempt, and we have tried almost everything at our disposal. Doctor Smith has insisted on transferring the patient to Anomaly Research Centre in Vorpool, where a number of her colleagues work. We are unconvinced, but without an alternative, our hand is forced.

--Transcript begins-- --September 15th, 2038, 11:36am-- Dr.A: Good morning, Evelyn. How are you feeling? UCI-K3387: Not great. This Processing stuff is, I don't know, it's getting tiring. Dr.A: I can understand that. This system is new, there are abilities like yours that we simply can't accommodate for in the procedure yet. But you're helping us- UCI-K3387: I, I know how it works. I'm glad it'll help, just... being the one who has to be tested a bunch isn't all that fun. Dr.A: I suppose you prefer being the one testing? UCI-K3387: You could say that, I guess. When I get out of here I've still, gotta finish my thesis. I can't let her work go to waste. Dr.A: I understand. If you don't mind, I need to ask some preliminary questions. Since entering into Processing, have you felt any nausea, migraines, bodily aches, insomnia, tinnitus, or vision imparement? UCI-K3387: Not really. I mean, insomnia, I guess. But nothing, like, uh... abnormal? Nothing I don't expect. Dr.A: What about your bodily functions? Have you been eating and staying hydrated properly since entering? Have you had issues with bowel movements, periods, etcetera? UCI-K3387: No, I've been perfectly fine. Dr.A: That's good to hear. Just one last thing for today, do you think you could show my your power? UCI-K3387: You know I can't. Dr.A: Could you try? UCI-K3387: I, (sigh), yeah, sure, yeah. Dr.A: Just take your time. Begin when you feel ready, and we'll see where it goes. (Silence) Dr.A: Hey, hey, Evelyn, you don't need to strain yourself. This is probably frustrating. An inability to properly use your Anomaly can happen, you just need to not worry about it so much. Just relax, think about what you do, and just let it happen. UCI-K3387: Sure. Fine. (Silence) (Static) Dr.A: That's (static) but (static) -ere's no elec-(static) UCI-K3387: What (static) (Loud pop from the microphone.) --End of Transcript--

Report conducted by Doctor Simon Rivers. During the Processing assessments for Evelyn Wolfe, UCI-K3387, a number of electrical and mechanical devices were rendered inoperable as a result of the forced expression of her Anomaly. This same event occurred during an interview conducted by one Doctor Megan Aniel at the Vorpool Anomaly Research Centre, when UCI-K3387 voluntarily activated her Anomaly through prompting. Until that point, Evelyn had been unable to voluntarily express the Anomaly, presumably due to the same resistance encountered when attempting to forcibly express, and Read, the Anomaly. Due to the lack of physical and cosmetic damage incurred on the devices destroyed by the Anomaly expression, it was determined that this was likely a main facet of her Anomaly. However, Doctor Abigail Smith detailed in her Reading that the Anomaly appeared to possess little destructive output. This, ordinarily, would imply a degree of instability on the part of the wielder, however this too was ruled out during the same Reading. One theory presented was that it could be related to Electromagnetic Waves, similar to an Electromagnetic Pulse Device, and so this was tested during the interview, during which no abnormalities in Electromagnetic Waves were detected. I came to the conclusion that we must have been missing something intrinsic in how the devices were unable to function. With no physical imperfections visible, we assumed that there must have been another reason for the failure, such as the exploitation of a mechanical vulnerability that the Anomaly happened to be attuned to. I can safely say that this is not the case. I am not wholly sure of the implications that this Anomaly will have, but in all further documentation, I shall refer to it as "Quintessence", in a fairly literal sense of the word. Quintessence, by it's typical definition, is the most refined, most perfect form of a substance. In the past, it was used to describe a fifth fundamental element, by which gravity and the passage of light was explained, and in more recent history, was a theory related to Dark Energy. Based on an evaluation of the damaged equipment, from the lightbulbs, to the EEG machine, and a number of other inoperable devices from the involuntary expression during Processing, it was noticed that the cause of the failure was not damage, but an abrupt incompatibility between certain electrical components. Therefore, it is our hypothesis that Quintessence abides by the concept of Motion described in Potentiality and Actuality. It is an Anomaly that gravitates material caught in its activation towards its absolute, perfect state of existence - to go from movement, to completion. Its most basic application should, in theory, be the forced cohesion of unlike material and components, so as to form exotic and technologically advanced structures and devices. I cannot say how this resulted in a resistance to expression and Reading - perhaps it had not yet perfected itself? - but I can say that, in time, this Anomaly may be able to propel humanity into a prosperous age.

Observational Report written by Doctor Megan Aniel Doctor Rivers's insistence on this "Quintessence" hypothesis appears to be paying off, at least for the moment. There doesn't appear to be any logical basis for how this Anomaly operates - the complete, unburdened forcing of two incompatible pieces of technology together shouldn't be physically possible, even in a world spontaneously filled with supernatural powers. There's no fusing of metal, no electron manipulation, no data or information control. And yet mere days ago she was successful in building a satellite worthy antenna from scrap electronics. There has to be something that we aren't seeing to cause this effect. There has been no change in her intelligence, as far as we have been able to measure. It's as though she has an intuition into how each object bests works with another, regardless of their logical comparability. Could it be possible that she, through the process of using this Anomaly, interacts with a universal law that we are yet to become aware of? If I didn't know any better, I'd look into the possibility of the components becoming quantum entangled, but it wouldn't explain the unparalleled cohesion. Pieces of technology, created decades apart, and with completely different components making them up, combined to create a working device without being stripped down to their most basic components, by a non-mechanic or electrician. It doesn't add up. If I had to compare it to any sort of realistic equivalent, it'd be like watching something use electrical tape to stick two things together, but actually receiving an impressive, fully functioning product as the result. What would a normal person think if they saw you tie a gas spectrometer to a megaphone using twine, and then use it to measure the elemental composition of Betelgeuse, with close to perfect accuracy? Just based on these findings, it's clear that we need to be undergoing more thorough, and rigorous, testing.

Processing Assessment for Evelyn Wolfe, 26. Processing and Power Expression initially conducted by Doctor Simon Rivers, Doctor Samuel O'Brien, and Doctor Abigail Smith. Expression Type: External, Manipulation Expression Resistance: Negative Expression Instability: Negative Specific Output: Incredibly High Destructive Output: Low Reading Resistance: Negative Biological Type: Negative Elemental Type: Negative Spatial Type: Negative Other Type: Positive Type Subset: Enhancement Output Type: Mental Effective Output: 100 metres, 12 objects Notes: Initially, expression and Reading attempts for UCI-K3387, Evelyn Wolfe, were met with unidentified resistance. This resistance has since been qualified as a growth period in the Anomaly, where both it and patient adapted themselves to encompass each other. As Evelyn has come to control the Anomaly, the resistance has disappeared, and the Reading performed by Doctor Abigail Smith seems to indicate that the growth period theory sits in line with the capabilities therein. The general Reading overview indicates that Quintessence, the Anomaly possessed by UCI-K3387, operates under the concept of enhancement, by which it rapidly improves objects exposed to the power on a fundamental level. Evelyn, through usage of this Anomaly, has demonstrated the capability to manufacture, with little more than outdated technology, useful and powerful tools and equipment, at a similar or sometimes greater performance level than its modern day equivalent. The specific bounds of this is unconfirmed, but if provided with more modern items, she could likely produce things well above what current technology allows. While this Anomaly has its primary function in relation to mechanical and electrical devices, it is not limited to them - in the case of ordinary items or materials, Quintessence creates a "reinforcement" effect, whereupon the object or material becomes structurally strengthened against physical damage. The specific upper boundary for this is unconfirmed, though evidence suggests the reinforcement only extends up to a certain point based on the material reinforced. A piece of cloth and a Kevlar plate do not reinforce to the same strength, even with the same stimulus applied. However, for many objects, this reinforcement is enough to survive up to armour penetrating gunfire with minimal to no visible damage. It is with this evidence, between Evelyn's own expression of their Anomaly, and a detailed Reading, that the patient is classified as a Delta upon the Societal Risk Classification Scale, and is on the fast track to being discharged from the Vorpool Anomaly Research Centre.

Dated July 11th, 2039. Reclassification Assessment approved by the Ministry of Anomaly Management. Name: Dr. Evelyn Michelle Wolfe Age: 26 Height: 165cm Weight: 47.2kg Blood Type: B+ Medical History: (See additional file) Criminal Record: N/A Current Place of Employment: Anomaly Research Centre, Vorpool Central Hospital, Vorpool The request for a Reclassification Assessment was filed by the Vorpool Anomaly Research Centre's Board of Medical Directors, on June 12th 2039. The reason is cited as follows:
The Board of Medical Directors for the Vorpool Anomaly Research Centre request an immediate Reclassification Assessment for Dr. Evelyn Michelle Wolf, on the grounds of interference. Since her initial Classification, Dr. Wolfe has acquired a position as researcher within the Anomaly Research Centre, however, prejudices against highly ranked individuals ensure that her work, and the work of the institution as a whole, is diminished, both through the biased withholding of funding and materials, as well as a consistent disregard for Dr. Wolfe's professional status. The initial Classification for Dr. Wolfe was granted under a still formative Processing system, and considered primarily theoretical statistics, as opposed to Reading data provided by Dr. Abigail Smith, and anecdotal evidence on Dr. Wolfe's mental and emotional state during her time sectioned in the Anomaly Research Centre. Further evidence on the lack of danger Dr. Wolfe presents to society, both from an anomaly, and professional, capacity, can be found in the additional document attached alongside this request.
The Reclassification Assessment was held at 14:30 on June 27th 2039, at the Vorpool Anomaly Research Centre, conducted by Dr. Michael Bell, and overseen by Taylor Alvarez of the Ministry of Anomaly Management. In consideration of evidence presented during the Reclassification Assessment, the initial Processing Assessments, and documentation of the individual's further assessment at the Vorpool Anomaly Research Centre, the Ministry for Anomaly Management has agreed to Reclassification. As of 23:59, July 11th 2039, Dr. Evelyn Michelle Wolfe will be classified as ranked Beta on the Societal Risk Classification Scale, with their Anomaly Database Record adjusted accordingly. - Adam Woodgates, Ministry of Anomaly Management.
