“So, in your mind, how exactly does Chess work?” Ramona asked dubiously. “It’s simple!” Stacy declared. “First we gotta clear all the pieces off the board!” Using both hands, she swept all the various pieces off the board and then ran her fingers over the smooth surface. “Now we can start! The rules are pretty simple! I’m surprised you don’t know them already!” she added with a giggle. “The white squares are my properties, and the black squares are yours. Any of the squares of your color can be built on, except the ones on the outer edge. That’s were our playing pieces go!” “Okaaay…” Ramona said warily as she began placing her King. “No, no, no! You can’t place that yet!” “But you said…?” “Playing pieces! Not buildings!” Stacy corrected, while wagging her finger. “See, like this,” she added, placing her foot on the table. The next thing Ramona knew, Stacy was pulling off her pinky toe and placing it on the white square on the corner of her side of the board. “Now, put yours next to mine!” “I’m not removing body parts,” Ramona stated bluntly. “That’s okay! You can use anything!” Sighing, Ramona removed a ring from one of her fingers and placed it next to Stacy’s toe. “Okay, now, the white square our pieces are on is called ‘Go’. The black square on this other corner here is the Jail. That black square on the corner to your left is the Cop. Watch out for that guy! If you land on him, he’ll send you to Jail! Then there’s Free Parking, that’s the white square to your right. There are two different ways to play with that space, so we’ll have to decide which way we’re gonna play with before we start. We’re also gonna need some money and dice.” Monopoly… Ramona thought wearily. She’s describing Monopoly… “Of course we are…” Ramona said with a sigh. Turning to face the shelf next to them, she grabbed a pair of spiked dice and a bag of coins. “Will these work?” “Yeah! They’ll work great!” “What about these pieces?” Ramona asked, gesturing to the pile of chessmen. “Oh yeah, the buildings! I should probably tell you about them next. See, these small ones are houses,” she began, pointing to the pawns. “These castle-looking things are forts, these horsies are zoos, and these weird-looking things are cathedrals.” “And the King and Queen?” Ramona asked. “Oh, those two are really important! The smaller one is a mansion, and the big one is city hall. There can only be one of those, and whoever puts it out first wins the game!” “I see…” “So, ready to get started?!” Stacy asked eagerly. “I suppose so,” Ramona said reluctantly, before reaching for the dice. “Not so fast!” Stacy admonished. “White always goes first, remember?” Ramona rolled her eyes. “How could I forget?”
