Before entering Kepler's Passage, the Prize was called to deal with a pirate ship that had taken human prisoners hostage. The pirate captain, a squid-like alien named Du-Vos, was demanding an outrageous ransom for the human's return. The Prize defeated him by hijacking the transport ship the human prisoners had been traveling on before they were taken hostage. The Prize and the hijacked transport attacked the pirate ship in tandem, while some of the Prize crew slipped onto the pirate ship to free the hostages. The pirate vessel was drugged by the science officer, and the pirates became intoxicated and unable to fight.
