His guild mates crowded around it, trying to ascertain its origin and purpose. If he hadn’t been talking to Ria already, perhaps he may have gone over to take a look himself. Though the mission to Era was intriguing enough. If not somewhat bothersome. These student uprisings were so common it was hard to imagine any work actually got done at Era University. The faculty deserved some kind of pay rise for all the nonsense they had to deal with. Ria spoke of a diplomatic mission, but if it was anything like Leon remembered then they should definitely be preparing for the worst. “Okay, I’ll give Irene a call.” Leon tried to suppress his childish grin to no avail. “She’s one of the smartest people I know. I’m sure she’ll be able to give us the information we need.” Leon gave Melia a little pat on her head, sending her back to the Fae realm while he went to get ready. After a quick shower to clean himself off from his morning exercise, Leon dressed comfortably for the Era mission. Keeping his codex strapped to his hip, he would be prepared to summon one of his Pixies if the need arises. Even though he knew some of the more eccentric characters from the previous coups, he figured the stakes for this mission weren’t particularly high. Glancing over to his bedside table, a small communication device sat at the ready. Lacrima powered, it allowed wizards to communicate via voice over long distances through magic signals. He stared at the device for a short while, lost in thought. It’s been a while since we’ve talked. Leon and Irene had kept up correspondence over letters, but it paled in comparison to the feeling of actually being with his friend. Would it be the same as he remembered? He reached for the device, punching in a series of symbols from a small, black notebook. The name ‘Irene’ was messily scrawled next to the array. He moved the device up to his mouth and awaited for the other end to receive the call.

The drone of the communication lacrima startled Irene from her studies, jolting her out of her chair. The prospect of a distraction from her upcoming assignments was more than welcome in her eyes. She practically leapt through the archway that led to her kitchen, sliding along the tiles in her socks. The place was a bit of a mess; dishes piled up in the sink, paperwork left about the counter and cluttered piles of textbooks and magazines which made the couch practically uninhabitable. It was a cramped, unruly place. Yet it held some sentiment of coziness. Much less stuffy than the pristine and proper Winchester mansion she used to call home. Now if she could only find the damned lacrima. Unearthing a stack of unopened letters straight onto the kitchen floor, Irene was ecstatic to find her device hidden beneath. She shrugged the mess off, letting her household tabby, Chester, claw away at them for his own amusement. She clicked the device, putting a halt to its incessant beeping, and answered the call with a chipper greeting. “Irene Winchester speaking, and might I just say how happy I am to take your call right now.” She glanced back at her study, poking her tongue out at the open books. There was a brief pause on the other end. Perhaps they dialed the wrong person? “Hi Irene.” She was about to hang up when a familiar voice dampened her mood. She stood silent, unable to believe she was hearing Leon Aldeharts voice. She was sure that he would never hear it again with the way things had left off. Okay, so he had sent a few letters now and then but it wasn’t the same. Especially not after he had abandoned her to go running about the world chasing fairies. Letters telling her how great things were going for him? Without her around? She loved hearing about that. “Um, Irene? Did I cut out?” Drat, she’d been silent for too long! She had to play it off cool. “Wait don’t go! I’m here! I’m here!” Flawless. She slapped her forehead and mouthed the word ‘idiot’. Leon chuckled on the other end. “It’s good to hear your voice, Irene.” A lump entered her throat. It held everything she wanted to say right then and there. Don’t you know how much you hurt me? Of course he didn’t. I hate you! Half true. I’m doing just fine now that you’re gone. A complete lie. “It’s good to hear yours too, Leon.” Irene clutched the device firmly. She wanted to yell and berate him for being so inconsiderate, but she knew she didn’t have it in her. Era had been so lonely since Leon left. She had other friends, sure, but she thought what they had was something special. Guess that proved how naive she truly was. “Hey so, myself and a fellow guild wizard have taken a mission to come sort out the latest in uprisings at Era. I was hoping you may want to lend us a hand? Help us get a proper grasp of the situation.” Irene could have thrown the device against the wall. Of course he wouldn’t call just to check up on her. No, there had to be an ulterior motive. He was a member of Fenixtear now, that upstarting Guild that had slain the dragon three weeks ago in this very city. Irene remembered the day all too well - being rushed to the evacuation centers until the dragon fell. Though when she had heard it was an independent guild that had done the deed rather than one of the Council Registered ones, she would never have guessed in her wildest dreams that Leon would be among them. And yet there he was, printed in the pages of one of her regular magazines - offering relief to his colleagues. “I know it’s asking a lot,” Leon began, but Irene had done enough listening. “Yes, it is. You know how these things go down, Leon. I haven’t dared to go near the main campus since it all began.” The professors had gotten so used to these uproars they had contingency plans in place for students like Irene who just wanted to continue their studies and ignore all the riotous shenanigans. Though unfortunately it meant she had to do most of her work from home. Anyone with half a brain would know to just stay away until it was dealt with. That’s what she intended to do. That was, until Leon had decided to ask for her help. “Okay, fine,” Irene groaned, admitting defeat, “I may or may not have decided to keep a few tabs on the situation. Just so I can move about the city without running into trouble. Here’s what you need to know-” Irene went on to explain who was heading the rebellion, as well as the members of the council that were assisting them. When she finished, he thanked her and severed the connection. She stared at the device for a while afterwards. Just what was she hoping to gain from involving herself in this madness?

Leon returned downstairs to meet up with Ria once Irene had given him a tip off of the situation. He had scrawled the details down onto a little scrap of paper. It was all pretty standard stuff, when it started and which faculty were caught up in the escapades. In particular, the list of students running the coup was what would be most valuable to them. Though Leon suspected from the beginning it would be them. “Alright, Irene says she’ll help us. We’ll meet her along with Professor Harvard’s thought projection at the University Belt.” Leon took another look at the flier, thinking of the group they would have to face against. He turned to Ria with his list. “Here’s who we’re up against.” Leon went on to describe the members of the student council who had all helped instigate the coup. Giselle Kaiser, a nice enough girl who Leon had shared a few classes with. Kai Haul, the guy was weird and Leon didn’t know much about him, truthfully. Ramiel Dreyar, a Dragon Slayer who Leon despised. He had been one of the few who insisted on antagonizing and demeaning him for his simpler upbringing compared to most of the student body. Hama Bloomfield, an entrepreneurial sort who Leon had the displeasure of dealing with when his Fairies caused some property damage to the school. On their own they weren’t too bad, some of them were even nice enough to have a chat with if you ran into them in the halls. Yet they were being led by Jana Fernandes, the younger sister of Professor Harvard. She was a wild child who used her brother's position as a means to get away with all sorts of rule-breaking shenanigans around the school. Leon avoided her like the plague during his time at Era - hoping she would graduate before he ever had to be on the receiving end of her ire. “We might want to see if anyone else wants to lend us a hand. If I know Jana, we’re going to be in for some trouble.”
