Lakshmi has been said to take countless forms to be with her consort, Vishnu in his different incarnations. The most infamous tale regarding Lakshmi is her supposed rebirth during the battle between the gods versus demons to gain immortality. One of Lakshmi's many domains granted her good fortune, which would thus be shared with those around her. Indra, the warrior god responsible for leading the war against the demons began getting arrogant, rebuffing the advice of the wise sages around him. In her anger, Lakshmi found Indra's behaviour so abhorrent that she vanished into the Milky Ocean, taking her good fortune and prosperity with her.

The gods, from then on, were no longer blessed. The world grew dark and greed overtook the world as the gods began losing control over the demons. Indra, in his panic, pleaded for help from Vishnu, who told him that to win the war, Indra and the rest of the gods will need to churn the Milky Ocean to regain the favour of the angry goddess. And so, Indra did. The Milky Ocean was churned for 1000 years before treasure began to rise to the surface, and a beautiful woman adorned in a sari standing upon a lotus flower appeared. With her return, good fortune spread and soon the gods were able to fight the demons away and restore order to the Earth.

Lakshmi has been known to be kind, granting favours to the unfortunate. But her kindness can easily be stopped. Greed is not something Lakshmi tolerates and is very prepared to strike down those that seek to take advantage of her kindness. She is said to bless each daughter with a part of herself, bringing wealth and good fortune to the family she goes to. Scriptures have also said she values bravery, persistence and virtue in her subjects, and her love for her husband and worshippers knows no bounds.[/quote][/indent][/indent]

Her many incarnations as the wife of Vishnu should have prepared her for near two thousand years of mortality, yet this was different. Cursed with immortality and the knowledge of her impact, her life as Princesses Rukmini and Sita could hardly compare. Once again, with her disappearance from godhood has left the world and its children open to darkness, corruption and greed. 

Lakshmi felt lost and disturbed. She could see the corruption, yet do nothing about it. Centuries passed as she watched her temples fall into disrepair, the lack of faith in her pantheon stinging her very core. Eventually, Lakshmi found herself yearning for more. The feeling of discontent grew as Lakshmi realised that her work at the temples was not stopping the growth of greed and darkness in the world. So, she began fighting the darkness in another way.

Lakshmi took the alias of Niya Gulati and began studying law. Prosecution felt almost a natural path for her to take. If she could put away the criminal and protect the innocent, Lakshmi was doing her duty to the people that once revered her.
