Personality:
Observant * Loyal * Blunt * Level-Headed * Stubborn * Quick-Witted Relationship Status:Single Questionnaire: What first impression do you make? A good one hopefully. I want to show that I'm the right guy for the job and that no one is going to regret putting their faith in me to watch their back. The last thing I'd ever do is betray the person I've given my blade to, so honesty is the best policy in my book. What are you like in a high stress situation? I like to think I can keep a level head most of the time; though some people say I'm more bull-headed. I didn't stay alive this long by panicking or blundering blindly into things. Now to say I never got into trouble at any point because of something stupid happening in a stressful situation would be a bit of a stretch, but I swear it only happened one...maybe four times, and I still came out on top. What are your best and worst qualities? Best quality I'd have to say would be my sense of loyalty to the people I decide are worth it. If I decide I'm on your side that is where I will firmly stay unless someone gives me a hell of a reason to change my mind. Worst quality, I don't hold anything back when it comes to opinions or fights. Those two things kind of go hand in hand, can't count the number of times I've gotten my hands dirty because someone couldn't handle a little criticism. What is something about yourself that you would never admit to anyone? I've got a deep set fear of losing the people I trust. I may put on a front of arrogant nonchalance, but it's difficult not to hope that people won't continue to leave. What are your dreams? The big one is to find someplace I can truly belong with a group of people who take the time to get to know me for who I am: an actually living being, not just a sword to be swung at whatever you hate. Getting rich while doing that couldn't hurt either. How do you want to be seen by others? I suppose as someone who isn't to be trifled with lightly. If I was born to look at least somewhat intimidating why not fully embrace that. I'd like to think that someone would take one look at me and decide they definitely did not want to get on my bad side. How do you see yourself? I know I can be boiled down to the bare essentials: hard-headed, reliable, good at swinging a sword and running the guns. It's difficult to see myself as much more than what the kind of life as a sword for hire and shipmate has made me, and in the long run I know I'm not super likely to get free of that image of myself anytime soon. It isn't the worst way to see myself though. Do you tend to make snap judgements, or stop and think about things? When it comes to shooting off the guns snap judgments in ordering the crew tend to be the way to go as those seconds can often be the thin line between life and death. I can sit down and think about things if the situation really requires it, but those kinds of decisions are usually on the captain's end of things. What haunts you? Everyone in the world has things they wish they hadn't done. I've killed quite a few people in my time, both personally and impersonally, it's just a hazard of the job. At least that's what I like to tell myself, but it does start to weigh on your conscience the more the kill count goes up. I don't necessarily regret what I did, but sometimes I do think about how my life might've been like if I hadn't taken up a job that involves to much death and destruction. Thinking about keeps the demons quieter. What is your philosophy on life? If there's a sword in your hand, fight with it, there isn't time to be cowardly in the game of life. In his mind growing up in the inhospitable wasteland that was a desert planet was the worst thing that could've possibly happened. Other than being born on an ice planet or something. His father worked the mines, collecting the rare gemstones and minerals that ran in the rock below the surface. All the while growing more and more ill due to the harsh heat, and mineral exposure. His mother was frequently off planet, doing various jobs for anyone who needed some hired muscle or something guarded. His father worked long hours and with his mother gone Kaladan spent much of his childhood by himself, or with the few other kids whose families made their home in the desert. All the while taking care of his ailing father. Anytime his mother would come back she would bring stories of the other planets in their system and the wide expanse of unexplored space, and like many kids, all he wanted to do was explore that unknown world. Once he got a little bit older his mother began to teach him the art of swordplay. He took to it quickly and getting to do something with his mother, who he saw so rarely, gave him more joy than he could've dreamed. Now when she would return she brought new stories and new tricks for him to learn. They practiced out in the sands, usually at dusk and into the night, while his father watched from inside the house. When his father had time, he would teach Kaladan the more crafty things that he enjoyed, music and woodcarving mostly, which gave him just as much joy as learning from his mother. A few years before Kaladan reached adulthood his father's illness finally claimed him; in the dead of night while his mother was off world. He was supposed to be awake making sure his father could breath properly throughout the night, but he fell asleep and his father died. Deep down he knew it wasn't his fault, but it is still something he ponders the "what ifs" of to this day. When his mother returned, she brought her usual stories and tricks, but she also decided that it was time for him to leave with her. Without her husband there to tether her to Ecrin she saw no point in staying. So, Kaladan joined the mercenary business with his mother, travelling the planets in order to make money and stay alive. The work was hard, and he always looked for ways to improve his abilities, both with weapons and the arcane arts, after he discovered an affinity for them when working a guard job for a wizard. He's not perfect at it, but he takes pride in being able to do just a little bit more. After many years of working with his mother the job finally got to her. They were told it was a routine guard post on a shipment for some committee member on Venzon, but the job was rigged from the get go by some of his mother's competitors in the business. They waited until the ship far enough away that they couldn't call for help before attacking and attempting to "steal" the shipment. It was just Kaladan and his mother, and they never stood a chance. He watched his mother get run through before taking a blast of fire to the chest. The competition took him with them and he was forced to work for them for a short time, where he picked up his skills as a gunner, before he made a break for it, killing their leader in the process. He continued on with his mercenary work before finally coming to join The Consortium. Freedom means a great deal to him, as does loyalty and companionship, and with them he feels he may finally be able to fulfill his childhood dream of seeing far off worlds.
