I don't meet to sound ignorant ... But what is this "march madness"?
It usually refers to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Sometimes referred to as 'The Big Dance,' or just 'The Dance;' the broader term 'March Madness' also includes the end of the regular basketball season (and the crowning of 'regular season champions' in each conference); conference tournaments (smaller tournaments between teams that regularly play one another); the NCAA tournament (massive, single-elimination championship, which includes all of the 'Conference Tournament' winners and the best teams from the season, for a field of 68 competitors); and also the NIT tournament (played by teams that missed the 'Big Dance,' but still won lots of games -- sort of like an 'honorable mention' tournament). Ironically, the 'Final Four' and the championship game are typically played in early April, because it takes a few weeks to narrow the field.
