He clapped along softly as the girl unplugged and packed up her stuff. Darla came over to him and almost dragged him by the arm. “Hey! Watch the Armani” Bas scoffed as he stumbled along after her towards the back of the stage. He watched as Darla tried to smooth her increasingly frizzy hair and walk out on to the small stage. The dark-haired young man crossed his arms in front of his chest and let out a low sigh. What was this? Nerves? A foreign concept for Bastíen Bonfamille, but he had never performed his own material in front of people before. He shook his head to clear his mind just as Darla started to speak to the audience. “Hey everyone! Slight change of plans… never a calm open mic night at Nectar’s right?!” she let out a small nervous laugh before continuing “Anyway the next performer was kind enough to jump in.” she looked back at Bas with a smile. “None other than MU’s own Bastén Bonfamille” Darla gestured to the side of the stage where Bas stood as she walked of clapping her hands. The audience followed suit as Bas walked out, he could hear some of his fraternity brothers whooping louder than the other patrons. He smiled at them giving them a nod and a smirk. As the commotion died down Bastíen sat down slowly in front of the piano that stood in the middle of the stage. Calmly he brought his hands together cracking each finger carefully as he steadied his breath. Almost as to shock the onlookers, Bas started suddenly started to slam the keys letting out a more rock sounding piece than anyone would be used to hear him play. Of course, that’s the result of being a concert pianist. But something that shocked the audience, even more, was when Bastíen leaned in towards the microphone and started to sing. You could almost hear the ripple of gasps and whispers going through the crowd. No one had ever heard him sing before. As he continued to sing the song he had been working on for a long time it dawned on him how easy it was to perform it since it was about one of his favorite people in the world… his brother. “Cuts and bruises bestowed as a child still bleeds you every day…” Bastíen’s voice echoed out through the speakers. He knew that Theo had it the hardest out of his siblings and Bas had always been able to see that it bugged his brother more than he would let on. “I see your pain drains you whole like a leech… just biding your time.” still, he knew his brother would do anything for him and Madéline. But Bas was still worried that Theo would leave as soon as he could escape their parent’s rule right after graduation. His blue eyes looked up for the first time and he spotted his brother and sister with their friends. A wide smile spread across his face as he made eye contact with his brother, hopefully, he would appreciate the song choice. “Let me share your load, even just for a while, time will heal even scars closer to heart. Better days up ahead rest assured, let’s just ride this one out.” this song was an ode to their bond as siblings, letting Theo know that he would always stand behind him, whatever stupid thing he would do. “Can’t imagine all the things you’ve endured, it’s time to try a different route. Let me share your load, even just for a while, time will heal even scars closer to heart.” He could feel the sweat dripping from his face as he continued to play more forcefully than he usually does. He looked up again surveying the crowd, locking eyes with Nolan sitting at his table of jocks watching him intently, he shot the football player a charming wink before continuing. “What to do when these words fail to reach, your walls are too high for me to climb” he let the last line linger as he played the last notes of his song. His breath was heavy as the silence turned into applause. Bas stood up quickly and gave the crowd a small bow and exited the stage the same way he came in.
