[hider=Backstory] Elarith Robert de Stael was born as the third son to a human father and an elven mother. His father was a high-ranking noble in the Capital and had high expectations for all his children – expectations that Elarith simply didn’t meet. From a young age all he wanted was to be a bard, to dazzle people with his music and stories, unfortunately he had been born without a single ounce of magical talent – meaning that even the simplest of cantrips bards use every day was beyond his abilities. He remained steadfast in his ambitions, though, much to his fathers’ chagrin – who deemed life as a bard to be beneath any son of his. When he was fourteen he overheard a conversation between his parents where they were planning on sending him away to some boarding school, which he refused to attend – so he ran away. He only took as much time as was needed to throw some clothes in a bag, grab some money and his lute before running off in the middle of the night, taking on the name Lara. A month later found him tangled up in the net of some hunters’ trap, hopelessly lost and slightly starving in the middle of a forest. He had been sure that he was about to die when and old halfling ranger found him, cut him down and took him to his home. The old man lived alone, never having married or fathered any children of his own, so he decided he didn’t mind the company and took the boy under his wing, teaching him everything he needed to know to survive, like hunting, tracking, building fires, knowing what plants are edible and what are poisoness. He even taught him how to fight with daggers and throwing knives as well as how to use a bow an arrow. While Lara still wanted to travel and share his music with the world, he really enjoyed his new life – the old man had been more of a father figure to him than his own was, which made it hurt even more when the old halfling passed a few weeks after Lara’s twenty-first birthday. Unable to stand living in the cabin without the crotchety old man, once the funeral was over he gathered his belongings as well as a tattered-looking ‘cloak of holding’ that he inherited from the halfling – which was more like a hooded shawl if you consider their size difference – and set off into the world.
