His facial expressions range from boredom to showing a faint shadow of intrigue, and the fact that he looks constantly tired doesn't make him look to approachable. He is rather short for his age, but his stiffly straight posture often makes him look taller than he actually is. He is rather thin and gangly, with pale skin that would indicate someone who hasn't seen too much sun, although pecularily he does have quite a few scuff marks dotted around his body. His constant, jet black hair is sometimes untidy, sometimes swept neatly to the side, but always too long so that it would cover his eyes. That doesn't stop Kay from staring straight through them as though they did not exist, however. He can be seen wearing any sort of clothes that he finds closest at the time, whether that would be a jacket on top of formal uniform or casual jeans with mismatched socks. One staple piece is that he always carries around a fanny pack or a backpack containing potions, medical supplies and notes.
Background:
Kay's household was fraught with difficulties from the start. Descending from a wealthy family owned conglomerate stationed in Castelia City, his father had inherited the immense wealth it entailed. But his father did not have any of the skills or the personality to manage it, and attracted many people who was only after money. The household would go through many marriages and divorces, 'friends' and subsequent betrayals. Kay was the result of the first marriage and the only child to be conceived into the Dernis household, and as such remained under the unfortunate custody of Kay's father throughout his life. As the household situation grew worse and worse, Kay and his father grew more and more distant. Kay would make an active effort to stay as much time in the library even though his home would have more exuberant studies, though every day he would return late at home to hear more and more of the inheritance to be sold to repay some unnamed debt. Kay's father, either by unwillingness or inability, never approached Kay either, instead squandering more and more of the inheritance with parties and tourism. So hours between their interaction grew longer and longer. Kay was used to wearing headphones to drown out the noise of drunken yelling and parties that would rise up from the downstairs lounge, although sometimes he would nonetheless be sucked into the drama of such situations regardless.. Growing up with such tiresome drama between people, Kay neglected to have hobbies or even aspirations in general. He was a glowing student in the eyes of his tutors, having an almost obsessive work ethic and the lack of 'extraneous desires'. They would quickly learn that such extraneous desires included nearly everything, from interpersonal relationships or even trying out in Contests. He didn't even have a Pokemon of his own, And so Kay grew up in a sort of limbo - he had enough academic backing to carry him through, but had nothing that he wanted in particular. Being alone for much of his life and nearly rejecting interpersonal relationships, he never had friends nor even a Pokemon for that matter. This changed when Kay found a dying Pidgeot at a back alley with its wings broken. Kay quickly rushed it to the Pokemon center, but he was too late to save the Pidgeot. When he came back to the house, he abruptly asked for a Pokemon, something he previously rejected. When interrogated on the reason why, Kay only cited that he "saw a spark" in the Pidgeot back at the alley, but he wasn't sure what it is, and he was driven to find out what. His father did not care for this sudden development, however, and simply 'gifted' him the family heirloom, a Honedge. Since then, Kay made efforts to made interpersonal relationships, but it was inevitable. The PMA was a place of prestige, admired by many. But to some, it would also be a prison, to lock away things one did not wish to see. Kay knew it when his father signed him up for the scholarship, knew it when he submitted his dissertation on Castellia City's pollution and the population diversity of local Poison type Pokemon, and knew it when he received the acceptance letter. And Kay knew, getting on the bus that took him into far away from his old 'home', that the back of the grey-blue suit would be the last he would see of his father.
Personality:
Kay acts much like a robot trying to learn how to be human. Most of the time, he wears a completely blank and unwavering expression that often intimidates people out of sheer indifference. Even when exposed to things that would often entertain teenagers his age or frighten them, he is slow to respond, if he even does at all. He is calm in many high pressure situations, although it is unclear if it is from strength of character or simply uncaring of the consequences. He has a strong work ethic, often putting him in the good books of teachers and mentors - but Kay easily grows bored and will only fill the minimum 'A' standards when instructed to do so. He is not necessarily quiet or shy, and will speak up and speak clearly when he wishes to, but he has trouble with small talk with other people outside of a diplomatic or academic situations. He is working on attempting to bridge out and understand how to interact with other people, recognizing that it is a necessary skill that he needs to understand - but so far his 'scientific approach' hasn't been too successful. Rumours of him having spreadsheets of his different interactions with other people, or whether he practices smiling in front of a mirror is yet to be confirmed. Having witnessed many family dramas, Kay is guarded and reserved when putting personal trust in others humans, but will readily entrust Pokemon. He believes as much as humans are capable of sophistication and development, Pokemon are much more reliable and honest. As much as he values sophistication and knowledge, he values loyalty and straightforwardness after seeing so much backstabbing in his household. Kay is strangely driven and almost romantic in his chase to find that 'spark'. He doesn't explicitly mention anything about the incident, but he reflects on it quite often. He knows it's something related to Pokemon, but isn't yet quite sure what about them that had piqued his interest, when everything else had been so dull and uninteresting to him. So he aims to pursue his current path in PMA, and relentlessly pursue that spark to uncover its identity.
What are some ways you would like to affect the story:
It's not yet determined what that spark he is chasing for actually is. It can be along the lines of simply a fascination of Pokemon, the potential for growth and the primal will to live, or even simply a philantrophic tendency to help Pokemon in trouble. Fundamentally, he is really asking for a reason to live - or a passion to pursue, and that is something that can be determined by interactions with other characters. It would be interesting for him to meet not necessarily a legendary or a Pokemon of great renown, but simply a Pokemon that forces him to reassess his rather sheltered upbringing and kickstart a character arc. Again, it would be quite dependent on who and how he interacts with the other characters at the start. I believe once that larger trajectory is set in motion, his pursuit of said goal would also be interesting to juxtapose against others. Kay has rarely taken it out of its Pokeball since receiving it. In battle, it is nearly as stoic as its master, carrying out orders obediently and carefully. Out of battle, it is surprisingly expressive by making use of its ribbons, either as a pointer or blindfold people when it is annoyed.
