Since the layout of the situation involving the Martian Mining Corporation is - for now - dependent upon cues from Niko's profile, then we have to take in the appropriate factors.  Niko is now 20, and he lost his parents a few years ago, when he was in high school.  They were part of the Resource And Management Incorporated vessel bound for Mars to begin mining operations.  That means that MMC has been on the planet for a few years, and although RAMI was delayed by the explosion, it's safe to say that they eventually made it to Mars, as well.

What happens on Mars depends on how things played out from then 'till now.  My guess is that it's been MMC having the larger site, more going on, with RAMI playing catch-up, and no [i]current[/i] life on Mars...but as they start to make it more livable or due to excavations or very many different things happening there, that's when things start to go wrong.

My thinking is that Wu Han could definitely have been asked to take out Niko, and that somebody else might've been hired to attack his brother (but we'll leave how that plays out for later).  This could lead to Niko wanting to go ahead with his covert mission, and even asking for some help among new friends (if they were up for it), but then somewhere along the lines of this action - perhaps before they can be caught or contained by the MMC on Earth - someone secret agent-y whisks them away to somewhere private to inform them of a classified event on Mars.

You see, we don't wanna leave Earth [i]too[/i] quickly, but it does seem like it might happen.  Whatever happened on Mars could still be on Mars, or there could be a situation of MMC exploiting something they found for bio-research, or whatever.
