This is something few in the modern age know, a guarded secret divided up between the few with the talent, resources, and drive to control the forces of reality itself. Magic is power. Power wielded in many forms; alchemical recipes and cheap enchantments, ancient relics and sorcerer bloodlines. Those who know of it covet it, and those who have it are inevitably drawn into struggle with others. Magic can be taught. There are very few formal education systems--magicians gain nothing from altruism--but some do exist. The most prestigious and infamous of these establishments is the Scholomance, a college of magic said to be run by the Devil himself. Every three years thirteen students are tested and selected to attend, spirited away to the ancient castle high in the mountains. There they face a gauntlet of instructions and trials. Those with aptitude graduate at the most powerful magicians in the world. And those who fail forfeit their souls. The teachers of the Scholomance instruct in all fields of magic, though they specialize in diabolism; harnessing infernal power. The Scholomance recruits students from all over the world, though the majority tend to be from the western world. America and Europe are the big recruiting areas, but students can come from all places and walks of life. Invitations to the school are granted to those the staff deems to have ample magical potential. Candidates typically receive a letter through some impossible means that informs them of their opportunity. Afterward they are directed to a testing area, where they are given both a written and practical exam. Those who pass both are then given a month of basic magic instruction before they are allowed to take the final entrance exam and be admitted to the Scholomance proper. Only thirteen students are accepted in each class, and unlike a traditional school there is little emphasis on grades. Students who do not excel are instead punished, and those not diligent are unlikely to survive long.

The schools of magic are numerous; evocation, divination, diabolary, necromancy, the list goes on and on. All of them, however, have this in common: They are ritualized applications of will. Casting a spell always involves a physical component, and sometimes a verbal. Hand gestures are common, as well as specific words. Generally the more complex the magic, the more complex the ritual; hurling a ball of fire may require a short flick of the wrist, while conjuring a blizzard might be an hour-long exercise. Though in theory any human is capable of magic, casting spells is very difficult and most beings are not intelligent, obsessive, or unfortunate enough to dedicate themselves entirely to perfecting their craft.

There are other things out there. Vampires, werewolves, faeries. None of them are friendly, none of them are good. Some of them have their own kinds of magic distinctly different from what humans can do, stranger and more powerful by far.

Can I know about magic before I get invited to the Scholomance? Yes, but you shouldn't be a well-versed or experienced spellcaster. Can I be a werewolf/vampire/supernatural thing? You may not. The Scholomance only accepts human students, and most supernatural critters are incompatible with humans for various reasons. How did I get my invitation? Letters of invitation are delivered, presumably, by magic. They're left on bedside dressers, tacked on refrigerators, or placed in other private places. If ignored or disposed the invitation reappears twice more before being rescinded.
It’s a modern magic school game! Specifically a magic college game. Players take the role of students recruited to the Scholomance as they learn and undergo deadly trials as up-and-coming magicians, as well as struggle with their (sometimes literal) personal demons. The game will likely be darker in tone, more of a Magicians than a Harry Potter. Some additional notes:

1) There will be a discord made once the game starts, please be able to join it.
2) Please be able to post at least once a week (though a little more would be ideal).
3) This is a small group RP, so if there's a lot of interest I'll pair down to 4-5 people total.
