Yes, playing as mythical beings is possible as well. 

The cults vary from god to god. Cults of Odin would value long seafaring voyages to unexplored land, earning honor in battle and dying violently to get into Valhalla. Similar to Mars and other war gods. Some gods like Athena would value culture and wisdom, intelligence and seek to more tactical/strategic in their approach to battle. 

All of the cults are focused on gaining more followers/intimidating others into submission. That's probably the only constant.
