I second Adverb in that I was thinking about Stargate when reading your post.
I see two directions this could go:
1) Campy, fun pseudo-militaristic exploration - i.e. Stargate
2) Weird, dark, brainfuck - more along the lines of Interstellar or Arrival

Not 1 would probably be more pure fun, 2 would probably be more interesting, but also more demanding of participants.
