"What kinds of things?" The questioner was a younger man and well kept, as all self-proclaimed scholars from the city of Marleon were before years of study and writing by the dim candlelight inevitably took their toll. Ruining their eyesight, cramping their hands, and destroying their posture, assuming they didn't manage to fall prey to their own stupidity while studying abroad in the field that is. "Forgotten things, or did ya not hear me the first time ya daft fool?" "I heard you just fine old man," the scholar snapped. Inhaling deeply, he took a moment to compose himself before continuing. "But as a scholar, and one with a vested interest in the town of Oldcross and its environs at that, it is my duty to find out as much about the area, its inhabitants, and legends as I possibly can." He cracked the slightest of smiles. "Consider it a matter of scholarly responsibility if you will." The hermit grumbled, scratching at the hardened dirt beneath their feet with a gnarled stick. "Eh, fine! Not like it's my life on the line anyway. If a young fool wants to get himself tangled up in unsavory business, who am I to question it?" The squat man shuffled closer, cupping a calloused hand round the side of his mouth as though he were conversing with a fellow conspirator. "So you want to know about the Maw eh? Well listen good young blood, for I'll only tell ye this once. Legend has it that there's something foul buried there in the heart of that mine, something from all the way back in the Old Time, or whatever you learned folk call it. Most of the people who live in Oldcross seem to think its some manner `o cursed artifact on account of the barren soil, since anything planted within ten feet of the Maw shrivels up and dies within hours." "Interesting... very interesting indeed," the scholar said, pulling a sheaf of papers from the satchel slung over his shoulder to take note. "And that's not all!" The hermit rubbed his hands together with an almost manic grin. "I've also heard tell that animals won't go near the place and that torches go out within the tunnels all the time, even when there's not a breeze to be felt! But that isn't the worst part, far from it! No, the worst part is the nightmares afflicting those who work the mine itself. Rumor has it that anyone who so much as sets foot in that accursed place is driven mad!" "I see..." the scholar muttered, scratching his chin. "Is there anything else you can tell me? About the surrounding area or the town's history perhaps?" The hermit shook his head and gave a small shrug. "I'm not one to know anything about that, only thing I know about the place is what I've heard, which I've already told ye. You'd be better off consulting the town scribe to tell ya the truth, as they'd know more about the town and its history than an old wanderer like me." The scholar nodded, letting out a disappointed sigh. "Ah, well many thanks for answering my questions in any case." He tucked his sheaf of papers away and, pulling out a small sack of gold, tossed a coin at the ragged looking man. "For your troubles." "Thank ye kindly milord," the man said as he inspected the coin, quickly sequestering it away within the folds of his tattered robes. "Powers favor thee." The scholar nodded as he put his gold away, watching the man as he shuffled back down the road for naught but a moment before continuing on his way...
