In the Big City...

It's been a few months since I started studying at Eukary University... and I still just can't get over how beautiful and exciting the city is... a young skunk girl thought dreamily as she rested her head against the cold windowpane of the subway train. She was watching soft snow slowly blanket the city go by as the train went by. Her breath fogged up the glass and she sat up to wipe it with one pink-padded paw, before settling back against the window. She sat alone and the other passengers kept their distance, but the girl did not seem to mind-- her head was in the clouds. No incidents yet... but do I dare show my face at Winter Carnival? Ohh... I don't know! There was a dull thud as the small skunk girl hit her head against the windowpane in frustration. Nearby passengers stepped back and looked toward her like she was crazy or diseased...snd maybe she was. Brakes screeched and the subway train came to a halt. There was a ding and a green light flashed above the opening doors, signaling that it was safe to exit. The young skunk girl picked up her backpack and walked down the train stairs, tripping a bit on the last step. "Ah! she called out, as she fell fast toward the ground. She raised her furry arms up instinctively, bracing for the hit-- But instead of hitting the ground, she found herself in strong, fuzzy arms. She slowly opened her eyes to see slitted feline eyes staring back at her. "Hi, are you okay?" he asked, smiling with big, sparkling, sharp teeth. "Ah! Let go of me!" the skunk girl recoiled, pushing out of his arms, stumbling as she went. The guy who helped her--a lion, it appeared--had sadness in his eyes and slowly drew his arms back. She could feel her tail raising, twitching. "I'm fine... sorry!" she apologized quickly, closing her eyes in embarrassment before she ran away. "Wait! You dropped--" he started, but the girl disappeared into the crowd. The lion frowned and crouched down to pick up something that fell out of her bag. A sketchbook? He got back up and brushed a few grains of dirt off the cover to take a better look.
Melanie Rose Pourri Eukary University
