Her right hand which had been resting on the pommel of her blade now drifted to her very flat stomach. She regretted not having borne a child for her late husband and just the night before last, they spoke of breaking off from the army to focus on beginning a family. To lead a more normal life as many other Norsemen do. She had hoped to bear him a son, as she was one of three daughters to a father who was very similar to Erik and knew that while Ingolf had loved them all the same, he had wished to had produced at least one male heir. Now that her husband was gone, Åse had to decide what to do next. She didn’t have much property to inherit as they had traveled with the army for as long as they had been married and her husband’s seafaring vessel is all she had left to remember him by. While she could go back to the small fishing village on the gemmel strand that she grew up in, she had no desire to try to return to old shores. As a woman of 20 years, she was beyond the age where most women married and didn’t want to struggle trying to fit back into society. While her icy blue eyes watched the flames dance upon her husband’s remains, Åse’s mind recalled the rumors she heard of new lands to the west. It would be hard work, but if she could gather a crew willing to go with her, she could carve out a life of herself. She turned her gaze to Kjartan and wondered if he would go with her, or would he leave like the rest of her husband’s band did?
