[color=D1668B]“My name is Tatum Elizabeth Paxton. I am seventeen years of age-- eldest child of Tate and Stephanie Paxton’s three offspring. I was born on 28th of January of 2002, when my mother was only nineteen and actively hiding from my father, whom she had eloped with in Las Vegas straight out of high school. See, their story wasn’t exactly like the ones you would find in a Nicholas Sparks novel. My parents’ relationship was, by all means, incredibly toxic: filled with endless screaming matches, many infidelities, countless broken promises, and the inability of these two lovers who so desperately loved one another to express their emotions in a productive, positive way. Thankfully, I wasn’t around for the worst of it.

In my father’s defense, Tate always made sure that my mother, myself and eventually my sister were not just taken care of financially, but utterly spoiled rotten. Unfortunately, I knew that this was his way of trying to compensate for his constant, painful absence in our lives. I was around and aware enough to remember the many times my father disappointed me and my mother. I lost count of the amount of times I had to put on a brave face to not break my mother’s heart even more than it already was pretty early on in life. But even then, Stephanie Paxton never once spoke ill about Tate in front of me. Instead, she always made a point of reminding me to never stop caring for my father, to always remember he was a human who made mistakes just like the rest of us, and to not be quick or harsh in judging him. One day, she said, I would come to understand the reasoning behind his actions. When that day finally came, she wanted me to confront it with an open, forgiving, and very loving heart. It was the least he deserved.

And she was right.

On my thirteenth birthday, my father sat down with me and told me every detail of his life story. It was a very emotional conversation that I hold dearly with me to this day, and one that reminds me of the importance of having a forgiving heart. Yet as much as I love my father and no longer hold any resentment towards him, I still found it quite difficult to trust him. He’d been doing well on keeping his word for some time now, but I couldn’t help the way I was always on edge and skeptical about anything he said or did. So when he and my mother communicated to my sister and I that he would permanently move in with us to try and be the family we were always meant to be, I was nervous. Instead looking forward to his arrival, I started looking up information about the best boarding schools in the State, and building my case as to why I should attend each one. Why, you might ask, did I want to leave my home just as things were starting to look up for my family and I? Well, the honest answer is that I really didn’t want to be around if Dad suddenly decided to pull another Houdini act on us and disappear again. I knew my heart wouldn’t be able to take it.

I think that, deep down, my parents also knew I needed the space. It took very little convincing on my part for them to see . By the time I graduated from middle school, I was already enrolled to receive my high school education at Marble Heights Academy. I’ve been a student here since my freshman year. I’m about to embark on my senior year journey in a few short weeks.

And dad?

He’s kept his promise so far. They’ve somehow managed to make it all work, and I’ve never seen my mother and my siblings so happy. 

Maybe, [u]just maybe[/u], this means I can stop worrying so much about everyone else and focus on trying to find my own happiness instead.
