But she had a growth spurt over the Summer. A whole three inches. She’s still getting used to it. Jennifer’s never really done much with the uniform, she’s never thought much of it, but it is what it is. Outside of some simple ear piercings and her hair fluctuating from its natural brunette to artificial blonde and sometimes somewhere in-between, the Filipino-American tends to prefer to keep things “grounded”. Fashion’s always been a distraction, though when not in the school uniform she has enough sense to have a wardrobe beyond “t-shirt and pants”. In the cooler seasons she tends to prefer scarfs and cloth hair-ties. She supposes it’s typical of athletes to feel this way.

| | R E P U T A T I O N | |
At face value Jennifer appears rather the conventional student athlete. She’s cocky, headstrong, but generally approachable and cautious in her decision-making; you’ll never see her act without thinking for the most part. Her sense of humor can be a bit much at times and sometimes be misinterpreted. Generally she means well. Her attempt at a romantic relationship at school, during Junior Year, seems to have taken its toll for reasons that she’s pretty private about. The only thing you’ll get out of her about it is that it was “too intense”, whatever that’s supposed to mean. Grew up in Sacramento, California. Sounds simple enough right? For a time, it was. The eldest of three children, Jennifer found herself a fairly happy and accomplished childhood in the upper class sprawl of Sacramento. Got introduced to basketball in the fourth grade, somehow it just appealed to her. Maybe a lot of it was the attention her mother had taken away from her and decided to give to her newborn twins. She didn’t blame her mother or anything, twins and all, she just wanted to not be forgotten. So this sport with an orange round ball seemed pretty appealing. If she kept her grades as perfect as she could and excelled here, mom would remember she existed right? Yeah. It was dumb. She was nine years old. It was probably the last time the world felt like it made sense to her. Two years before she found her father in his office, limp, with a gun in his hand. That’s when the anxiety got really bad; when she felt nothing was right, nothing was in control. By the time of his funeral service… she just didn’t know what to make of it. Didn’t cry. Mom yelled at her. Still couldn’t. If it wasn’t for her studies or basketball or whatever else she probably wouldn’t have recovered. It’s easy to find control when you control the motion of a story or a game. At least, that’s how she felt. Time ushered on. Jennifer kept focused on academics and sports, or well, the one sport she was getting even better at. Won a regional tournament in seventh grade. Took back a national championship the next year. Soon enough, her mom was pushing to relocate her away from Sacramento. To San Francisco. Marble Heights. Bigger school. Nobody knowing much of her background she found happiness in the idea, though she did regret moving away from Sacramento as the twins were getting older. But her mother believed in her and expected her to do great things. That’s what Jennifer figured, though she never could look her in the eye after the incident, so things were confusing too. “It is what it is.” She told herself; “Keep fighting.” So that’s what she did.

| | B E Y O N D M Y R E P U T A T I O N | |
Jennifer is most definitely neurotic and suffers from anxiety. Which she likes to hide from when it turns up. It’s weird, being a student athlete you’d expect her to be unable to perform with the spotlight on her. That’s probably the only time she can push past it; sometimes it feels like it only exists in a bubble away from the playmaking. It’s probably part of her own way to cope. This can tend to play into her own fears and hesitations. She wants to think everything through because if she thinks everything through she can control it and by proxy control her anxiety. Relationships have gotten messy due to this and Jennifer’s fluctuating moods. She just works hard so most people don’t see it. Can’t be seen as a “hot mess”, after all. She's pretty savvy for an athlete. [*] On the other hand, subjects such as Math, Economics, and Chemistry are her worst enemy. Numbers are hard.

Cool idea. I’d like to give it a shot if you’ll have me. That aside I did not anticipate the background for this character to be so dour on paper, but well that’s just what happened. The character is not as depressing as her backstory, I assure you. Pinky promise. Hopefully its good enough.
