Both were introduced to him by his big brother Shiro, and when it came to dueling Riku was naturally drawn to the HERO cards. Even before he had enough cards to build a Deck, Riku would often find himself swiping his brother's deck just to admire the cards and play pretend duels with himself. Of course, Dueling was eventually banned, and that changed Shiro for the worse. Shiro had been on the pro circuit, and so Dueling had become his full-time career by this point. But thanks to the ban, his career was shattered. He had fallen into a depression, no longer finding any passion in the cards or in comic books. Then one day, he was gone. Just packed up during the night and left. No note or anything indicating where he had gone to. He'd taken his deck with him, but left three of his Fusion Monsters: Elemental HEROs Great Tornado, Sunriser, and Absolute Zero. Absolute Zero was always Shiro's favorite, and it made no sense that he would leave it or any card behind. Riku was a sophomore by this point, but hadn't played the game since the ban. His strategy in the game had deviated somewhat from Shiro, focusing on Masked Heroes and Xtra Heroes to take advantage of the more modern strategies and playstyles. There had to be reason for Shiro leaving, and Riku was determined to find him. If he took his deck with him, then it almost certainly had something to do with rumored underground illegal duels. So Riku took up his deck, reorganized it to add the 3 cards Shiro had left behind, and decided to go searching for Shiro. Additional Info Riku doesn't use his real name when Dueling. He figured it was safer to duel under a Pseudonym. And so anytime he entered an underground tournament, it was always under the name Anki, after favorite Masked Hero card. He also had a habit of wearing outfits that masked his face so that he wouldn't be recognized. In a way it's almost like he had become one of the Superheroes he read about, or like one of his own Hero Cards.
