Skrik's time wasn't wasted. He found a small pile of decent stones and used one to sharpen and shape another. He used the first sharpened stone to craft those five sticks into five light javelins. Then, he poisoned three of them and set them with his existing one. He left the remaining two unpoisoned and went back to the stones. With every stroke, he tried to improve his understanding of the rocks and the best way to shape them. These rocks were fairly common, he supposed, and would be good practice. With this in mind, while his young cousin searched, he continued to practice until he felt his skills were good enough. Then he went to work on the largest piece he had gathered for himself. This one was to be an axe head. It was not an extra large stone but it was big enough for the resulting blade to be as long as Skrik's two fists standing one atop the other. With about two-thirds of that in its body, the weight and penetration power should be more than enough for his young cousin. After all, Skrik wasn't really an axe or club user. But, his young cousin had potential and if that potential was realized... Skrik would need to be able to reward him. Still, Skrik was unprepared for how swiftly his young cousin returned with an achievement. Skrik said nothing at first, merely looking at the black stone in his young cousin's hand for a long moment and studying it as best he could. It's tendency toward sharpness was obvious. The question was more about what kind of blade to shape it into. At last, Skrik accepted the black stone and set it aside with a nod. His eyes locked with those of his young cousin. This was a good find and bringing it to him instead of keeping it told something about this youngling's qualities. "Good find. Well done, cousin." Skrik said approvingly. "Now sit and shape stones with me. You should keep some of yours for throwing, shape them if you want. Make one for cutting. If any are left, do with them what you want and then hunt a rabbit for yourself." After saying this much, Skrik returned to finishing the axe head and making a few practice spearheads from the common stone. Only after the spearhead practice was done did he take up the black stone and begin to carefully shape it. He wanted a good spearhead that would have unmatched sharpness. It would be a great advantage against the stronger beasts that he wanted to hunt. When he finished, Skrik looked around to check if his young cousin was done shaping stones or if he had already gone hunting. Then he stood up and stretched before taking an inventory of the result of his efforts. He now had a replacement for the sharp stone knife that he had lost as well as a good number of poisoned javelins. The obsidian spearhead that he had tried to make required closer examination to determine its quality but the two best of his practice spearheads might work as tips for his two regular javelins. Most importantly, he had finished the axe head. He needed to examine its quality as well but if it was decent then he would gift it to his young cousin in return for the obsidian. Skrik would be ready to hunt with his young cousin when this was all done, as he had offered. But, what should they hunt? Rabbits would fill their bellies but they wouldn't test themselves or get much stronger from such prey. Skrik had heard about spiders and bats and snakes, but spiders and snakes would likely be dangerous without medicine or armor and the bats would probably have numbers on their side.
