He lived in the depths of Lake Biwa in a palace of solid crystal and coral, controlling the tides and rainfall with his legendary jewels. Like the sea, Ryujin could be both destructive and benevolent, but he was respected by the people of Japan as the nations’ guardian and the bringer of good weather and harvests.

[ APPEARANCE ]

[ PHYSIQUE ] Gwen is not a particularly physically imposing figure. Small and dainty, Gwen is of noticeably short stature, with a svelte, petite figure. While she is far from gaunt, having played some sports and gone to the gym some in her past, Gwen’s musculature is not particularly impressive for a girl her age. Clearly oriental, Gwen has warm beige-colored skin and tans quite a bit in the summertime, taking on a honey-colored tone under the summer sun. Gwen has dark-colored hair that falls down to just past her shoulders. Her eyes are a dark shade of mahogany, warm and deep, and framed behind short, dusky eyelashes. Gwen prefers the warm many, many times over the cold, and when it's not summertime, her sylphlike form would likely be buried beneath several layers of heavy jackets. [ HEIGHT / WEIGHT ] 5'2" // 103 lbs.

[ PERSONALITY ]

[ PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION ] Though legally an adult, Gwen is emotionally, in many ways, a child. Gwen is bubbly and sweet, with the sort of childlike energy that most teenagers have long since shedded with the onset of adolescent angst. If the standard phase of trepidation ever hit Gwen, she never showed it. Gwen is abundantly ebullient and almost excessively friendly, but to her, there is no such thing as too much friendship in the world. A naturally very caring, sweet, and gregarious girl, Gwen rubs off well with most people. She is a people person, through and through, and one that is very lovable in many ways. Gwen is definitively naive, an innocent, pure soul with a wholesome view of the world around her. She truly does view the world as an oyster, one full of wonderful opportunities, and that humanity is the pearl. Gwen is a positive, optimistic thinker and dislikes cynicism or the concept of giving up before it's even begun. Gwen is also incredibly curious, having a childlike sense of wonder about the world, and always enjoys learning about new things and experiencing new experiences. Her inquisitiveness knows no limits, and her mind is always processing as much new information as it can at all times. Gwen is, in many ways, fragile. She wears her heart out on her sleeve and can easily be hurt by others' words. Though she puts on a very convincing brave face, at her core, Gwen is very sensitive and is a bit of a crybaby. Though she's very lively, sweet, and caring when she's in a good mood, she can quickly grow to be very petulant and sulky if she's hurt in some way, and will often scurry away to find solitude at these times. Though she's pleasantly quirky and idiosyncratic, she's grown to be a few shades more insecure about herself and her peculiarities recently than she had ever been in the past. She grew up sheltered for much of her life and has only just recently gotten a chance to truly step outside of her shell, and while she's still perfectly comfortable in her own skin, there are still some self-doubts that gnaw at her soul about her personality, her body, her love life (or more accurately, her lack of one) and her idiosyncrasies. Perhaps this new experience of traveling across the country to become a Communicator might help open her up to the world. Gwen is a great friend to have, but she also needs some good friends herself. Much like a butterfly, Gwen is vibrant and lovely, but fragile, and she needs to find her own place to land and call her own. [ LIKES / DISLIKES ] [ w i p ]

[ BIOGRAPHY ]

[ Place of Origin ] Fremont, California [ BIO ] Gwen was born in Fremont, California to two immigrant parents. Her father, Zhang Jianhong, was a professor of engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, after having moved to America from China in adulthood. Her mother, Lu Wen, was also a first-generation immigrant, though she arrived at the tender age of 14 and would later graduate from Stanford's med school and become a doctor. As such, the family was firmly positioned in the upper-middle-class of American life, and Gwen would go on to live very comfortably. At an early age, Gwen clearly demonstrated that she was bright and destined for big things, her IQ having been measured in the 150s. She was well-versed in most academic pursuits, but the one that stood out to her the most was marine biology. She loved sea creatures and critters of all sorts, and read book after book on ocean life and water animals. She had found her niche and intended on pursuing it to the next level. Gwen's academic talent was boundless. She studied extensively and would go on to be accepted into a science-focused magnet school, where she continued her high achievement and would have already published two research papers (on the migratory patterns of the California sea lion) by the time she was 18. She had been accepted into UC Berkeley as a Regents scholar and seemed destined for a career in the sciences, but a strange dream would change all that. One night, Gwen dreamed of a massive sea dragon coming to her at night, telling her this strange, fantastical tale about her becoming some sort of representative of the dragon. It was an interesting dream, but what Gwen did not realize was that it was not just an interesting dream. It was reality, a reality that Gwen realized one day after blowing up the sink and flooding the basement of the house. It was then that she realized that this dragon creature, Ryujin, was real, and that she really was being chosen for something special. In the following days before Gwen was to start college, a lot happened. She found a pair of beautiful jewels underneath her pillow that would help her control her newfound water abilities somewhat. She would also continue getting messages and advice from Ryujin, now a voice nestled in the back of her brain, instructing her to head across the nation to New Hampshire (of all places) to fulfill her legacy as a Communicator. Days later, a mystical letter would arrive in the mail convincing her parents she would be attending a very prestigious East Coast university. Gwen was terrified of this decision, but also hopeful in a way. She loved marine biology and manatees, but this was an opportunity to do bigger and better things. And so, instead of continuing to bask in the California sun and look out across the San Francisco Bay, Gwen was stuffing her suitcases with extra coats and mittens to travel off to New England, to begin a new chapter of her life. [ REASON FOR CHOICE ] Ryujin has an admiration for those that have a special appreciation for the ocean and aquatic life, as well as for those willing to use those gifts to help better the world. While Gwen isn't exactly a warrior, she does check both those boxes and has a lot of personality and spunk to make her a good choice to become a Communicator. Her brains are also quite helpful. Not everybody has to be a fighter, after all.

[ POWERS ]

[ RELICS / FAMILIARS ] From Ryujin, Gwen has inherited the Kanju and the Manju, two teardrop-shaped glistening gemstones. Through these two gemstones, which she wears on a necklace around her neck, Gwen can channel her powers to control water much more effectively. Kanju allows Gwen to control the flow of water, while Manju can create water from the surrounding land instead. Without these two Relics, Gwen's powers are limited significantly, so if one was to take these Relics from her somehow, her ability to fight would be severely compromised. [ POWERS ] I. Rising Tides: Gwen can use the power of hydrokinesis to manipulate water. While she can do this without or without her tide jewels, it is with the gemstones that Gwen can create new sources of water and manipulate water with a great amount of fluency. Without the Kanju and Manju, Gwen can only use this power in bursts and without a great deal of control. With the stones, however, Gwen can create structures and complex creations using water and manipulate it in all its forms. II. Sea Animal Communication: Gwen can speak to other sea animals with her abilities. While she can't command them, she can understand what they are saying and convince them to offer her a hand. Gwen has particularly enjoyed speaking to goldfish thus far, just because of how sweet they are. III. Ryūjin Shinkō: Much like Ryujin blessed the Japanese with rainfall and good harvest, Gwen can call upon the forces of nature to provide favorable weather conditions. This ability is very rough around the edges at this point in time [ INVOCATION ]

Befitting his title as the Dragon King, Ryujin is immensely powerful. Capable of controlling the seas, tides, and water in general, Ryujin is also physically incredibly strong, being a massive dragon. Of course, like the other Old Deus, being summoned to Earth is immensely draining and requires a great deal of physical exertion on the part of his Communicator. Known for his jackal head and role as the protector of graves, the last resting places of all mortals, Anubis was an important God in the Egyptian mythos that was once the preeminent figure in the pantheon, though he would later be overshadowed by Osiris in his role as the vanguard of the Afterlife and later be ousted from power entirely. While not extremely burly like a body-builder, Teddy has developed a broad-shouldered build from a significant amount of physical labor and training in his youth. He’s of above-average height and mesomorphic, with ivory skin and chestnut-colored brown hair. He has a somewhat pinched face with high cheekbones and has deep hickory brown eyes. [ HEIGHT / WEIGHT ] 6’1”" // 198 lbs.

[ PERSONALITY ]

[ PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION ] Teddy is a quiet, serious soul. He isn’t harsh, or mean, or unpleasant, really, in any way, just simply a solemn individual. He can usually be seen with a dour expression on his face, and isn’t exactly the type to speak up about any pressing issues on his mind. Teddy tends to be very private, an introvert at hard, and can often spend a lot of time lost in thought, considering the implications of what’s happening around him at any given point. Teddy isn’t anti-social, but he isn’t exactly social, either. He won’t shy away from company if it comes to him, but he isn’t enthusiastic about mingling with others, either. He prefers small groups, if anything, He is agreeable enough but isn’t exactly a great chat. He seems unenthusiastic or straight-up disinterested in most conversation topics. He seems perpetually tired when it comes to most gatherings. Teddy is very stoic and serious when it comes to dealing with mystical issues. He takes his role as a Communicator very seriously and will give a death stare to those who fail to approach their duties with a sense of gravitas. He isn't entirely against humor, and will enjoy a good chuckle every so often, but overall he is a very somber, grim, macabre person, one that calmly stares death in the eyes. While Anubis' Communicators had previously been all Egyptian, upon moving to a new continent, Anubis turned his attention towards a family of frontiersmen that were pushing out towards the western frontier called the Langstons. Anubis' 20th Communicator was a settler and former gravedigger named George David Langston, an orphan and Yeomen farmer from Georgia. George was a good soul and a capable Communicator that would later be eaten alive by harpies. Out of pity, Anubis sheltered George's young child and would later bestow upon him the powers that his father once held as a Communicator. Thus began a legacy of the Langston clan as the communicators for the Jackal-Headed God of the Dead. George's son, Bartholomew Jay Langston, would end up being gunned down in the crossfire of the Civil War. His son, Paul, would move to Oklahoma only to be killed in the Galveston Hurricane. Four more Langstons would be chosen since him- two of them would perish in their line of duty. Teddy was the heir to the Langston legacy, the child of Theodore Langston Jr, who was himself a Communicator of Anubis, and whose father was once a Communicator of Anubis as well. The family lived in a quiet chateau several hours away from Tulsa near the Arkansas border, and were for the most part isolated away from much of society, obtaining much of their food from the land and only occasionally heading to town to pick up a meal. It was the quintessential American life. Even in this smaller chamber of isolation, the older Ted was often away from the family. Except for the rare occasion that his father returned back home, Ted lived in solitude with just his mother, Marianne, his younger sister Eleanore, and their three dogs. It was a quiet, peaceful life, and Teddy was a quiet, peaceful, boy. He aged into a quiet, peaceful, young man. Teddy liked books, exercise, the guitar, songs- he liked picking things up independently. Through all this, though, Teddy realized and accepted that, in all likelihood, he would be succeeding in a role that had been passed down for many generations, and would hopefully be passed down many more. The day after his weary father, covered in horrendous burns and battle scars, returned home once day and announced that he would be done with the constant battles and travels, the voices came to the younger Teddy. He didn't need to be told twice. He packed his things and got ready to go. [ REASON FOR CHOICE ] While not official, Anubis has preferred to draw from this particular family pool for many generations, for good reason. The family's original patriarch was a gravedigger, and the family's ancestral estate is located adjacent to a massive cemetery. More than just the bloodline, though, Teddy demonstrated seriousness and responsibility towards his duties as a Communicator that very few accept, making him an excellent choice to represent the industrious jackal God.

[ POWERS ]

[ RELICS / FAMILIARS ] From his father, Teddy has obtained the Sceptre of the Dead, a was-sceptre of dark blue and gold. The item is used mainly to direct Teddy's powers, though it can be used to block a weapon if need be. [ POWERS ] I. Guide of the Dead: The traditional power of Anubis' communicators, Teddy can call upon lost souls to assist him in the mortal world for a limited period of time. The lost souls appear like glowing, ethereal zombies and can help the young Communicator in combat significantly through numbers. II. Embalming: Teddy can quickly wrap things, animals, people, or anything really in thick bandages, akin to mummification. It's useful for slowing an enemy down or just for comic relief. III. Necropolis: Teddy can control the process of death immensely with this power, able to keep somebody that should be dead alive for much longer than they should be. This ability is very difficult to master and requires a lot of practice, which Teddy did not have available to him while he was back in Oklahoma. He wasn't exactly planning on digging up any corpses, anyway... Capable of using powers similar to the ones that his Communicator uses with ease, Anubis can also summon swarms of locusts from his body to devour his opponents.
