A moment in time...
“I don’t know. I feel like maybe we shouldn’t be here… you know? I’ve been up and down those hills and back and forth those fields. I’ve walked the streets. I’ve seen young and old… But through it all… I first pushed myself to keep fighting. I did it for the people I knew. Pana… Henry… Geralt… But now I… I just don’t know. I can’t find the strength to fight anymore. What are we even here for? After all the blood I don’t feel any better. The vengeance… it fades… I’m not even angry at them anymore. How can I be? They kill mine and I kill theirs… but it’s all the same. People die… the world moves on. It’s like they never existed… So why fight?” Weak hands lay upon the bed, shifting away from the woman sitting beside him. In his white robes he, at least, felt some comfort. Shirking further away and crawling into his ball the man felt his chest, caressing the bandages that held his chest together. The motions of a wounded and sick man spoke to the woman beside him, her nod an affirmation that much would need to be done. Standing, Senja turned to face the window. In the dark room there was little to see outside of the abyss. But when one ventures too far they find themselves in a spiral. You grasp and you clutch and you try to hold onto anything but before you realize it you’re going down. Round and around you spin in the whirlwind as it swallows you. It chokes you as you plunge further in and the light grows dim. You scream for help but nobody can hear you. What lay beyond is the product of a swallowed soul. Ripping the curtains from their place roared with clashing metal and a flood of light. And though the man shielded himself with his arms another pair had found themselves upon his own. Slowly, hands crawled and came to touch his cheeks. “You poor man… How hard it must have been to have come all this way only to feel like there is no way out. How awful it must have been to have endured it all… how awful it must have been to have felt everything come undone. Please… find the strength to look to me. Let me see your eyes.” The man adjusted himself slowly, nearly retreating from her touch. She gently grabbed his arm, giving him a small squeeze before coming a little closer. “Please, I am here. I am here.” As she spoke, so too did the man return to her, giving to her his gaze that peered into the field of emerald. “We fall… we break… we cry… we shake. Our hearts they sink and our spirits, yes, they quake. But upon that horizon is another day. You are a child of the light. Your friends- you will see them again one day- but your work is not yet done. You have so much more ahead of you. I see him in your eyes. There is a beautiful man who is trapped, frozen and alone. But he doesn’t have to hurt anymore. He doesn’t have to be alone anymore.” She placed a hand upon his head and another around his chest, wrapping him closer as tears wet her uniform. “It is alright to cry. Let it out. Let out your pain. I am here… I am here…” “I… I don’t know how to… I…” “You don’t have to know… It’s okay to feel lost. It’s okay if you feel like you don’t know what to do. When your darkest days are come, you need but only look to the ones before you to inspire you. And when they are in despair you need only look within to rescue them… And enjoy life. It is a precious thing. You are a precious life… you’re worth every moment you keep breathing. Find your meaning again. Find your way again. Show the love you have to others because in your heart there is a warm man who can lighten the dark. I believe in you, Louis. Even if you feel like doubt is all you have, know you are so much more…” “Senja…”
Senja walked the halls with Councilor Roman, step by step taking in the fading hues of that orange light. Step by step, they weighed the actions of the day and took in the relative silence. There was so much work to be done, but there never was enough time. Even as they stopped to gaze upon the garden, she found difficulty in focusing. “Senja? Are you alright? You seem a bit more worn than usual.” “Yes, Roman. I am just tired. There were many who needed our help today.” “Yes… yes indeed I cannot deny that we have had many with extreme stress come in recently. The war has taken so much from them. From limb to eye and eye to mind… They’re all in so much pain… I cannot stress enough how much the facility appreciates your time. You can engage with them in a way that none of us quite can.” “They are more comfortable speaking with a soldier, but not even I can make all talk.” “They called you an angel. Look and actions alike had earned you such.” “But I am no more than a humble servant. Still, so long as they found comfort in my stay then that is all that matters to me.” “Mhmm… but Senja… do get some rest. You cannot continue to help others if you do not take care of yourself. If there is anything the facility can do for you then do not hesitate to come to us for treatment.” “Of course, Roman…” As Senja moved to walk away she found herself glancing back, turning once more to face the man with hands to stomach. “Oh, did they enjoy their treats?” “The muffins? Absolutely. Damien would also like to play more of that patty cake as well. It has been so very long since he has smiled so much. Do come and play with him again when you have a chance.” “I will, Roman. I’m glad they all enjoyed their treats. They’re all very lovely people. I will do my best to return!” With a wave, she pranced off, skipping and humming as she returned to her home.
Home had never felt so far. Even as Senja closed the door behind her she felt as though she was on the opposite end of the world from her cabin. She practically staggered walking in, giving a squeak as she hopped on foot and balanced herself on the following jump. Sounds of weariness overtook her cheerful outlook for the moment. Even as she smiled she couldn’t help but feel somewhat helpless herself. Life was beautiful. That much had always remained true to her. Even now she believed that to be true. But so very many were in pain. How hard it was to convince the many to accept a life worth living. How hard it was to give people the hope they needed. Even still, she realized all the same that she but inspired others. There was no such thing as her being the one who took control of their fate. But that helping hand… She looked to the couch, the snoring Anneli ever diligent in her work as a sleeping beauty. With careful and quiet steps she approached her friend, bending at her knees and giving her a gentle kiss on her forehead before pulling the covers over her. “Soon we will back to the front-lines, Anneli. Be strong for me as you always have been… ”

Senja Penttilä

“Thank you again, Senja. Maybe one day they will let us treat these injuries before they become so heinous. Mere minutes mean the difference between an arm kept or lost. As interested as I am in the prospect of having had fellow practitioner in you back when I was in school I cannot say that your ability to bring them back alive is anything short of miraculous.” “Thank you doctor, but you have them to thank as well. Their loving spirit kept them alive, not I. God has graced me with the speed that I find them and bring them home, but I do but no more as a servant. Though I do desperately wish to be able to save them when they are beyond the reach of a doctor. Prayers, as you know, cannot always save the dying.” “Yes, that may be true, but pray to your god that you might continue. It is surprising how many in your hand have survived just long enough to turn things around.” Senja gave a bow, placing hands together at the sounds of entry. “Shall I grant them entry?” “Of course, we are done here for now. I will return to check on them soon, but I must first cleanse myself. I trust you and the others to keep the peace.” “Yes, doctor.” “Quinn is fine.” As the doctor left the immediate area Senja moved to grant entry. Her first sight was a curious one, but not unwelcome. She had to look up a bit as he was a few inches taller. A pretty style of hair for sure and the roundness of his cheeks were cute. But this was no time for extended observation. “Greetings, friend.” She began, listening to his explanation before giving a gentle nod. “Of course, they are resting now. Speaking to their soul will surely bring them to peace. Victoria is also welcome! I know you two will be very nice to them having come all this way just to raise their spirits. Blessings be upon your loving hearts.” She spoke, a wide yet closed smile given to them as she held the entry way open. She even gave a small wave to Victoria as she came into view. As they entered Senja quickly signaled a nurse to bring a chair as she herself grabbed another one and held it before approaching Cienie again. “And where will you be performing Mr…?” She asked, expecting his name to be presented.
[@samakama][@Smike]
