At first, her father did love her as she was his only child and did for a few years raised Maria the best he could for s single father. But given his profession as a medical doctor, Dr. Ludwig rarely had an easy life balancing his daughter and his job. Still, he perseveres until Maria got her first injury tripping on the concrete sidewalk. What would have been an alarming knee scrap for any parent, Dr. Ludwig could not believe his eyes when he saw the wound repair itself in a matter of seconds. It was so quick he feared he imagine it but his daughter’s fall was undeniable. He needed to know, needed to test, needed to figure out what exactly happened. From that point on, Dr. Ludwig saw Maria not as her daughter but as his new project. At first, the experiments were tame as he simply waited for her to injure herself more and observe the bruises and scraps slowly healing. Once he concluded that his eyes were still in reality, Dr. Ludwig escalated his inquiry and that turned Maria’s entire world upside down. She became a prisoner of her own home as her own father relentlessly tested the limits of her miraculous healing. Everything about the procedures was brutal and barbaric in every sense. Mutilations, dissections, and vivisections were the new norm in the house with every bone realigning itself further launch Dr. Ludwig into a realm of total depravity. Every poison, disease, and injury known to mankind was inflicted on Maria as she grew up, further destroying her mental sanity just like her father. Soon enough, the pain was such a common occurrence that she simply started to ignore it completely or in some cases, embrace it. As she approached her late teen years, Maria was more than willing enough to torture her own body just as much as her father who was at this point wanted to use the healing blood to cure death itself, to resurrect his dead wife. But alas, the German authorities finally caught up to him. While Dr. Ludwig was busy experimenting on his daughter’s healing blood, he also secretly tested it upon cancer patients and other maligned sicknesses that his daughter did not have. These “miracles” at a local Munich hospital were too good to be true for a few wary Germans and indeed when the GSG 9 crashed into his home, he was already prepared to flee the country. Unfortunately, he failed and he was put on trial for a gross number of charges, mainly domestic abuse of his daughter. Dr. Ludwig pleaded for insanity and was whisked away from Maria’s life. As for her, it turns out her father wanted to escape to the US to hide despite the close relationship Germany and America had. Maria herself was curious about the US and thought of why he chose them. But it was Julian who came into her life speaking impeccable German and even teaching her some English. What was he asking for? Join a team? She will be useful? Save lives? Sehr gut. Maria’s blood is capable of curing all wounds, injuries, poisons, and diseases known to humanity. If it’s a first-time exposure to a new sickness, the healing blood will inevitably adapt to be a curer of that poison through prolonged exposure. Indeed, the healing blood is potent enough that if you removed Maria’s brain from her body, the blood will simply regrow a new one with all her memories intact just like an axolotl. However, it has a normal lifespan like normal blood and will lose all its healing properties when the blood cells die. In fact, it's so potent that decapitation is null if her head is reattached to her neck in a timely matter. One major boon from this healing blood is infinite stamina as her muscles would never tire out due to constant replenishment.

[SUP][SUB]
C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:
[/SUB][/SUP]

All Maria knows throughout her life was pain and isolation. Despite all the torture inflicted by her father, it’s a genuine waste for her healing blood to be hidden from the world at large. Besides, it’s important for her to regain her empathy and compassion through good acts, not bad. In her own weird way, she enjoys curing people, she really does. Her hatred of diseases and poison is absolute and detests their presence in anyone. A world free of sickness would be a good world for her. On a meta-level, someone has to keep the teammates alive.

[SUP][SUB]
C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:
[/SUB][/SUP]

To be blunt, Maria in her current state is unfit for society. She would fail any psychology test given to her and be a general hazard to anyone near her. In all honesty, she belongs in a straitjacket as her lack of empathy is disturbing. Much of her twisted thinking was forced upon her by her father; bizarre philosophies of the purity of the human body. The supremacy of a natural human body, free of ills and modifications. Maria was a deep and uncomfortable reaction to cybernetics and synthetic humans.

[SUP][SUB]
R E L A T I O N S H I P S:
[/SUB][/SUP]

Like her father, she sees the people around her as guinea pigs to stab needles into to satisfy her morbid curiosity about the human body. Try not to get injured, her first aid, even her surgery skills, is hazardous enough to be considered self-taught. In reality, her father did teach her proper medical procedure but Maria mostly ignores the ethics of medicine as her healing blood allows her to be more reckless/callous towards her patients.
