Hmm, I was thinking a monster taking the form of the moon's native species (the chameleons) settled its way inside the core unnoticed. Since chameleons are cold blooded, it wasn't detected by radars and now the characters have to fight it/find help/traverse dimensions/etc.

...or something along those lines. ^^'
