When God chose them for the time-travel trial, he told them they were fit because he only saw humans but no humanity; creation born in his light but grew up doing the devil's work from law and order disruption to whatever irreparable evil actions that served their selfish personal objectives.

Perhaps this was the perfect excuse to send them on a journey, not to save the world and correct historical errors as a way to redeem their crimes, but to kill one another in different time and place settings as a blood sport set down by the deity. There couldn't be a better punishment-- to be torn away from the life they once lived and thrust into a nightmare. A nightmare where the participant's death is a coin of victory for the other.
