I called for back-up and we searched the whole car, looked at the footage and everything. He was right there. He’d opened the door. Then the door started doing I-don’t-know-what. And then he just — what, went ‘poof’ into thin air? I don’t know what else to say.”

“Orie’s a very ‘proper’ sort of guy. Like, kind of a teacher’s pet, but not in a bad way! All you need to do is ask and he’d totally lend you a helping hand, as best as he can. Takes a bit to warm up, but he’s super chill once that’s done. And he’s real smart: always topping the class, even after the first disappearances. 

But yeah, the disappearances definitely sparked something in him. It was a sort of domino effect, you know? His sis couldn’t cope with Apollo vanishing like that, and, well, Orie loves Mana. Like, a lot. He got really emotionally invested in the case. I guess he kinda roped me in too. I’m a fan of true crime, but Orie was crossing the border to Caulder’s Hollow regularly and staking out the place and all, like a P.I. or something. I think quite a few of the locals know him by now.

As for that night… I honestly got super scared when I saw the lights come on. I was panicking and hyperventilating and all that, then Orie was like, ‘I think we should wait til we get somewhere brighter,’ because it’s midnight. So we went real slow until we got to the gas station. Then it’s a bit of a blur, but there was shouting and we had guns pointed at us. Then I got out and got down. Then the cop started cussing and oh my God, I thought Orie was about to get shot, because he can’t exactly walk and maybe there was a misunderstanding. 

Then the car went all funky and next thing I knew, Orie was gone. And I was just frozen because, honestly, what? I didn’t know what I’d just seen. OK, I couldn’t see much, because I was down on the floor, but I know for sure he’d been next to me in the car and now he wasn’t in the car and he hadn’t gotten out, either. But Mara came back, right? Orie will too. All of them will.”
