I'm afraid I can't add much more than what BrokenPromise said, culture/economics/industry/geography etc will determine the clothes if I'm trying to take things seriously. [i]Though I just go rule of cool and generally do whatever I think fits in some vague "Damn son these visuals could be like a metaphor" sense.[/i] However when it comes to art and designing characters and whatever, I generally follow the rule of giving room for ears/tails. Big pointy ears? Hole in helmet/hat/hood. Tail? Hole, opening, or some sort of fancy strap that goes across it. Tails- especially for the lizard people -can also have sheaths for short swords, machetes or knives and daggers depending on how big the lizard is. Also pouches!
