Often described as ‘ bastard’ or a ‘smug little shit’, due to his incessant need of making inconvenient jokes at other people’s expenses. Despite that, he was considered to be a funny fella by most people in the school, even if it was obvious he didn’t have that many friends. Extremely intelligent, was on the very top of most of his classes, despite his lazy, laid-back attitude (nobody has actually ever seen him pick up a textbook, andyet, he was still an honors student). Biography TW: MENTIONS OF ABUSE, DRUG USE, CANCER, SCHOOL SHOOTINGS Lukas always knew he was a bit strange. Off-putting to the masses. It started with his name ‘Malkovich’, as Ukrainian as his parent’s bloodline, without a hint of that BBQ-loving, gun-shooting, red-blooded American charm that everyone loved so much. His parents had emigrated to the USA, to escape the cold, hard life in their hometown. For some godforsaken reason that Lukas will never understand, they decided to go to Edenridge. They didn’t receive a warm welcome, to say the least, and neither did their children as they were born, but as the years went by, things balanced themselves out. The town got used to their weird, alien presence, and they raised their kids to adapt to what Edenridge wanted. Pietro was the eldest, and the older he got, the more he fit into Edenridge. But Lukas knew he wasn’t anything like his older brother, who was good at sports, had loads of friends, they all called him ‘Peter’, for Pete’s sake. Lukas remained as the odd one, pale, scrawny, who always stayed inside, hiding from the other kids while reading a book or playing some game. He could hide from the other boys inside, but there was no hiding from his drunk father, shouting out slurs around the house and beating Lukas with a belt whenever he was being ‘too loud’. He hated the outside, hated the inside, hated Edenridge. Lukas gave up on being accepted by the other kids early on, the defensive wasn’t working, so he switched strategies: he could never beat them in a fight, but he could at the very least really piss them off. That’s when Lukas first discovered his love for getting under people’s skin. The bullies Pietro hung around, or the mean girls who called him greasy in math class- it was easy to pick up on what annoyed them, and of course he used it against them. Some people thought it was funny, especially when he didn’t use it against them, so having a sharp tongue and a big mouth actually worked in his favor, he was much less of a victim after that. He got invited to parties, even if he had to deal with the likes of Alison Davies. He, frankly, didn’t understand the hype around Little Miss Perfect. She was exactly the type of person he couldn’t stand, which is why the two of them got into some form of argument almost every time they were in the same place at the same time. He still thought it was a shame she went out like that, though. As it turned out, Lukas didn’t have many friends. There were people who talked to him cause he sold them cheap cigarettes and booze, and people who got high with him under the bleachers, and people who paid him to write essays for them. Even Charlie Decker, the psychopath bastard, would share a smoke or two with him, from time to time. But there was nobody he’d a call a ‘friend’ for the most part, nobody whose house he’d drive over to in the middle of the night when things with his dad got too bad- until Archie. He was one of Pietro friends, a football player like him, the kind of guy who would suck up and simp for Alison Davies day after day, and yet- Lukas liked him. Archie thought he was hilarious, which helped, and before Lukas could do anything to ruin it, they were joined at the hip. He remembered holding him during the shooting, hiding underneath the tables in the Chemistry lab, Archie bleeding out slowly, face buried in his shoulder. He could never forget, no matter how much he tried. Archie died that day, so did Charlie, so did a fuckton of people. There was nothing left here in Edenridge, only a father who hated him, a mother who barely acknowledged him and the remains of Pietro’s perfect life. Lukas got out, after senior. He went to Columbia, he studied computer science, he got really high and made out with his friend’s boyfriend- and then he got the call. Cancer of the liver, that’s what Pietro had. Some cruel joke, one that forced him to drop everything he nearly had and go back to that hell of a small town. “Offcomers go home”, God, sometimes he wished those signs would work.
