Theme Song: Why They Fight: Half-Japanese, half-Chinese, Mai has struggled to fit in anywhere her entire life. Everywhere she goes, it seems someone will judge her for her heritage. She's had enough. She's going to make sure that everyone knows her as her, not just as “that Chinese girl”. Background/Personality: Born to a Chinese father and a Japanese mother, Mai Li has always struggled to fit in. On one hand, she has very little connection to China; she has never been there, as she was born and raised in Japan, and her only knowledge of the country comes from her father and grandparents. But on the other hand, her heritage is not something that can be discarded so easily. Memories of the war are still fresh in the minds of the Japanese people, and it's hard to find someone willing to trust a “sangokujin” easily. She's sick of being seen as a foreigner in the country that she calls home, and she's sick of being associated with people an ocean away. Why can't anyone see her as herself? Why does she have to act this way or that way in order to be seen as a “proper” Japanese? Who cares where her dad came from? So she's thought of an alternative: if people won't treat her like just another person, then she's going to do what she can to stand out. She's going to be loud. She's going to be boisterous. She's going to do everything in her power to make it so that when people think of the name Mai Li, their first thoughts aren't going to be “that's the Chinese girl, isn't it?” And that means putting in the effort to stand out. “Orthodox” is the one word no one could ever use to describe Mai. She's as stubborn and as insubordinate as they come, openly defiant of any authority and totally willing to give something a go just because it isn't what's expected of her. Above all else, she values her individuality, and hates the thought of being seen as just another part of the crowd. That said, she does have limits. Her rebellious attitude is more of an attempt at expressing individuality than it is a genuine rebellion against authority, and it isn't like she's going to kill a man just because she feels like it. She's tomboyish and bratty, but she isn't an out-and-out thug, and although she can definitely finish a fight, she isn't so keen on starting them. At the end of the day, she still cares about her reputation, and she'd wants to be known as cool and unique, not violent and unhinged.
