Ever since she was a little girl, her mother (also a midwife) would take her along, explaining everything to little Christina, passing all the knowledge from previous generations of midwives back in Poland. Treating wounds and diseases - She has some basic knowledge of medicine. She tries to save up money to buy some medical textbooks, since her father won’t let her attend medical school. Herbalism - Folk knowledge of natural remedies was pretty extensive in her mother’s family and she passed it on to Christine, as well as a small herb garden in the farm’s back yard. Personality: Christina is very friendly and outgoing. She always tried to look on the bright side, to find positives in every situation. Often she gets in trouble due to her lack of respect for authorities and a tendency to speak before thinking. Likes/Dislikes: She loves life and her freedom, wants to try out everything and enjoy everything, even things that are deemed ‘inappropriate’ for women. She hates people that try to tell her what to do, and customs that dictate how a proper woman should behave. Backstory (optional): Her father’s family had been living in Longwater for a long time, building a prosperous ranch. Her mother’s family was traveling through the town with a caravan of Polish settlers, and the two young people fell desperately in love. Marija’s parents had a different suitor for her in mind, a man from their own community, but Marija refused him and married Carl in secret. Her family was furious with her, and when the caravan continued its way, they left her behind - the last contact she ever had with them. Despite being an outsider, Marija won the hearts of the townsfolk with her friendly attitude and the word of her skills as a midwife soon got around and she was often called to help women during labor and other medical emergencies. As soon as little Christina could walk, her mother would take her along, having her help out and explaining everything to her. As Christina grew up, more than anything she wanted to go to college and become a real doctor. But her father was a traditionalist and the idea of a female spending her ‘best years’ studying and then working as a doctor just wouldn’t pass by him, no matter how hard Christina and her mother tried. He insisted that she would find a decent man and get married, like any other girl would (and should) do. So far, Christina has managed to resist that fate, but since her mother died she has no one left on her side. Christina has a complicated relationship with local doctor Jacob Baum - mostly they hate each other. Doctor Baum doesn’t like that someone who hasn’t studied any schools meddles with medicine, let alone that someone being a woman. Christina hates his condescending attitude and outdated methods. Also, being the only doctor in Longwater, he charges rather hefty sums for his care, and most people cannot afford to spend such money on doctors and medicines. [/hider]
