Hayato's father cared for him despite him being cursed and paid extra attention to Hayato, especially when he was a baby. His mother, on the other hand, hated Hayato because he took his father's attention away from her. She would hit him whenever he cried or did something wrong, and whenever she was really mad, she would hug him to turn him into a chick and threaten to throw Hayato into the oven. This only happened when his father was at work and Hayato thought he deserved his treatment, so his father had no idea about Hayato's abuse. However, Hayato was not safe from his father either. His father had a mental condition that made him hear voices. They told him that he should beat the curse out of Hayato so that he could be cured and have a normal life. He tried to ignore the voices at first but in the end he gave in and would hurt Hayato too, because he was convinced that in the end the pain would be worth it if Hayato would be saved. 

The abuse was daily for Hayato until Touya discovered the truth and rescued him. His mother was sent to prison while his father was sent to a psychiatric hospital, so Hayato asked Touya if he could stay with him. Touya agreed and Hayato has lived with him ever since. Hayato has nightmares and he is afraid of physical contact because of the hugs his mom used to give him, but he is slowly feeling comfortable and less shy around the other zodiac members. As for outsiders, especially because he has observed how Touya hates them, Hayato is afraid of them and won't speak to them if he can help it.

His favorite food is french fries and he likes to play with all types of birds, not just other roosters.
