On 20 December 1967, the 74th LRRP (Platoon) was established On 1 February 1969, Company N (Ranger), 75th Regiment was stood up to serve as the Long Range Reconnaissance and Surveillance Detachment for the Brigade. From 1965 to 1969, the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol organization was a Platoon. When N Company, 75th Regiment stood up in early 1969, then it was a company sized organization. The LRRP platoon was four teams of four men. The LRRP Teams of N/75 were nine squads of six men in three platoons. What time period would you like to focus on? The critical event for the 173rd Airborne Brigade during Vietnam was the Battle of Dak To in November 1967. Before this battle, the 173rd only fought against Viet Cong units. Dak To, was the only Combat Airborne Jump by any unit (173rd) during the Vietnam War. It lasted 20 days and they fought against PAVN units which were better equipped than VC soldiers and much more motivated to fight. It was a rough 20 days with several Sky Soldiers being killed in action. If we aim for before Dak To, the fighting is pretty simple; small skirmishes with black pajama clad VC troops. If we start with Dak To (67), it will be a chaotic maelstrom of fighting involving the US 4th ID, the US 101st Airborne Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. It was a major event. After Dak To, the four battalions of the 173rd were eviscerated and required time to rebuild. They were back to fighting strength by early 1968. But from then on, the 173rd were in a constant state of combat through to 1971.[/i][/b]
