Class: Saber True Name: Alfred the Great Appearance: Sex: Male Alignment: Lawful Good. Attribute: Man. History: The King who laid the foundations of English glory, Alfred the Great was well-known as a wise and humane ruler who repeated the achievements attributed to King Arthur, such as driving out foreign invaders, establishing peace and prosperity, and encouraging the spread of literacy and learning, all the while recognizing that the strength of England lay in mastery over the sea, a mastery which he tried to wrestle from the Viking invaders. A friend of the Welsh Monk and Scholar Asser, he helped lighten tensions between the Anglo-Saxons and the Brythonic peoples which once peopled the Isle of Britain for a generation, earning the respect of both. Oh, and he also burned an old woman's wheat cakes by accident. All these achievements (except perhaps for the cake-burning) were true. What was also true was that in his reign, the last magic from the Age of Gods in Great Britain was drained away... And this was by his hand. For to drive away from the Vikings, who called on their Gods to rain lightning and thunder, storm and snow, he worked with the Holy Church to forge two swords, a cursed blade which drained Mana/Magical Energy from the enemy and sent it to the Reverse Side of the World, and a blessed sword which slew only those with inhuman or divine blood... Including his own, due to his heritage from the god Wotan/Odin, one of the 'False Gods' worshipped by the Vikings. He lived a full life, with neither of his blades turned against him, nor did he suffer betrayals from his family or those who had cause to resent the results of his actions. For his' was a case where a hero was not only genuinely virtuous and heroic but also lived his happily-ever-after. Personality: Alfred is unrealistically kind, smart, and compassionate, even towards his enemies, to the point where it seems unsettling. When his bravery and wisdom is included in the mix, he seems like the King everyone wanted to rebel against because 'He's too perfect'. But look deeply enough and one realizes that he does cry and feel joy and has loves other than his duty to Kingship, and he can be a goofball when confronted with the prospect of new knowledge. Despite his looks, he also tends to act like a father to anyone who lets him treat them like his children, and like a good father, he takes a high interest in their welfare and education, hoping to bring out the best they can be. In short, he is a man of moderation and temperance who balances out being a King with being a Human, and would have words with Artoria and Iskander if he ever met them. Parameters: Strength: B Agility: A Endurance:C- Mana: C Luck: A (Hey, he got a happily ever after, right?) Class Skills Magic Resistance: (A) - Cancel spells of A-Rank or below, no matter what High-Thaumaturgy it is. In practice, the Servant is untouchable to modern magi, so it would not be an exaggeration to title the Servant a "Magus Killer". You don't commission a sword which drains Mana and get away with it without getting a boost to your ability to resist Magic in your next life... Riding (C) - One can flawlessly manage beasts and vehicles if they have received the proper training and adjustments. Most vehicles and animals can be handled with above-average skill. However, cannot ride the likes of Phantasmal Species such as Monstrous Beasts. There are few legends of Alfred riding anything, and Anglo-Saxons were not known for being cavalry. They did ride horses, but dismounted from them when it was time to fight... Personal Skills Weak Constitution (C): A weakness struck by the nature of frail health. Similar in nature to Innocent Monster, where the perception of the people in the future affects the existence of the Heroic Spirit. And by that, Alfred had Chrons' Disease in his lifetime and succumbed to it eventually (although otherwise, his life was happy). This means that every other posting round, he risks his Endurance dropping by one rank. Divinity (C-): Alfred is allegedly descended from Wotan/Odin, but he freely disregards this trait of his' because he is a pious follower of the Church. Bravery (B): At this rank, the threat of overwhelming force does not faze Alfred the Great, who can resist mental interference effects of this rank (note that Magic Resistance already negates most such attempts to interfere with the workings of his brain), but more importantly, it increases the Melee Damage he inflicts. Tactics (C+): Provides a bonus against Anti-Army Noble Phantasms, and this modifier is increased when waging a guerilla war or a defensive battle against overwhelming odds. Charisma (B+): A composite Skill consisting of a person's charm as well as the natural talent to command or unify an army or country. Increases the ability of allies during group battles. As Alfred made friends with the Welsh and soothed over their greivances with the Anglo-Saxons during his lifetime, persuaded Gurthum to convert to Christianity and ally with him after his victory at Edington, he thus gains a rank up when he tries to turn an enemy to a friend or reach out to someone who should be his enemy. Noble Phantasms: Name: Witchbane Title: Sword which drains Magic Rank: A Type: Anti-Unit, Anti-Mana Range: 1 - 10 Targets: 1 - 15 Description: When thrust into a Magus, a Phantasmal Beast, or another Servant, Witchbane drains the Mana from the target and sends it to the Reverse Side of the World, thus saving Alfred from the risks of absorbing too much magical energy. It can also siphon away the magical energy used by Noble Phantasms which rely on blatantly magical attacks... Name: Devil-slayer Title: Sword of the Church Rank: C+ Type: Anti-Unit, Anti-Unit (Self) Range: 1 Targets: 1 - 5 (if the sword is swung widely enough) Description: Devil-slayer is a sword made by the Holy Church to smite the Vikings and their False Gods and those who claim descent from them, and can thus inflict burning wounds on those with nonhuman heritage and even those with divine lineage... Name: Happily Ever After Title: Crystallization of Implausible Happiness Rank: A+ Type: Anti-Unit, Anti-Unit (Self) Range: 1 - 70 (or whatever the size of Fuyuki City is) Targets: 1 - 150 Description: A crystalization of the fact that Alfred the Great won his battles and his wars, made his kingdom prosperous and strong and did not treat children like dirt and they loved him back. This told a story that was both real and rarely repeated, a genuine hero with a genuinely happy ending (yes, there was his Chrons' disease, but compared to what Artoria suffered, that was miniscule). This means that should a set of conditions be fulfilled, this Noble Phantasm will activate, and fate and causality themselves will begin bending to give Alfred and his Master a happy ending by any means possible. Here are the conditions: - Alfred must have a Master who shares 'chemistry' with him, one he gets along with and has a similar moral code. - Alfred and his Master must have an enemy which can challenge them like the Vikings challenged the former. This enemy must not have been created by their own actions unless said actions are in accordance with their moral codes. - Alfred and his Master must undergo this serious test of their body and mind and survive without compromising their morality. - The process of achieving the above three conditions must be entertaining to a hypothetical outside observer. If it is boring, then the skill is not activated at all and stays dormant for the duration of the Grail War.
