Born of a powerful onmyōji clan fallen into hard times, Yasuna would frequently go to the shrine to pray for good fortune and for his clan’s prosperity. One day, he discovered a white fox near the shrine that had been trapped by a hunter. Driving the hunter away and freeing the fox, Yasuna thought little of it. But to the fox, the shrine’s own guardian kami Kuzunoha, this kindness meant everything. Taking the form of a beautiful woman, she sought out Yasuna and vowed to be his bride, bringing him happiness and, unbeknownst to him, bestowing blessings upon his clan. As the years went by, Yasuna’s clan grew in strength and Kuzunoha bore him a child named Dōji. Kuzunoha was happy, however fleeting that happiness may have been. But even she could not have foreseen just how quickly those halcyon days would come to an end. What happens next is the subject of some interpretation, be it Kuzunoha’s tail being inadvertantly spotted by her son or the princess whose face Kuzunoha stole exposing her. Regardless of what happened, the result was Kuzunoha being forced to flee back into the woods surrounding Shinoda Shrine, leaving behind a poem for her son and husband to come find her. If you love me, come and visit, in the forest of Shinoda in Izumi, the resentful kudzu leaf Or at least, that’s the popularized account. In truth, the ending to Kuzunoha’s tale was far more bitter than sweet. It was indeed the woman whose face she stole that did her in, but the unexpected dagger of betrayal that was thrust deep into Kuzunoha’s heart was what truly drove her to flee. For when her true form was revealed, the man she loved, who had saved her life and whom she had pledged her life to, the man for whom she had done so much just to repay him for his kindness, looked upon her with fear and disgust. He was appalled by her deception and could not stomach the knowledge of her true nature, that his wife of so many years had been merely a fox in disguise. Egged on by the princess, Abe no Yasuna banished Kuzunoha from his home, demanding she return to the forest where she belonged. Because she simply could not accept the reality of what had happened, Kuzunoha left her poem thinking it all to be merely the machinations of the jealous princess, believing in her heart that Yasuna and Dōji would return to her once the princess had left Yasuna’s house and everyone had come to their senses. But they never came. As the years went on, Kuzunoha would come to learn that not only had her husband truly forsaken her, but had in turn wooed the princess and taken her as his wife. Angered by this, Kuzunoha turned her blessings upon his household into blights, robbing them of the good fortune she had bestowed. In return, the princess demanded Yasuna kill Kuzunoha, and a legion of hunters was dispatched to put an end to her. Perhaps inevitably, it was the same hunter that trapped her once before that ultimately put an end to Kuzunoha. As she lay dying, she cursed not the hunter, nor even Yasuna, but herself for having ever loved a human. The only thing she did not regret was her son, who would one day become the legendary Abe no Seimei. Personality: A self-proclaimed villain who likes to play petty tricks on humans for fun. Has a biting and thoroughly bitter sense of humor and a mischievous streak wider than her crooked smile but is ultimately harmless unless provoked, despite her protestations to the contrary. She prefers deception, trickery, and manipulation over direct confrontation, but will not hesitate to attack any potential problem or threat with ruthless efficiency. For some reason, she’s very particular about the “aesthetics of villainy” (though some might say she just has a particularly childish idea of what a villain should be). Having been spurned once, she's quick to assume the worst of people, and earning her trust will prove difficult. Basically, there's a good heart there somewhere, but you'll have to find it first. For hobbies, she enjoys tanka poetry and will often hold poetry battles with herself, swapping between melodic and chaotic styles. Parameters: Strength: D (+ when using Shapeshift) Agility: D (+ when using Shapeshift) Endurance: D (+ when using Shapeshift) Mana: A Luck: A+ Class Skills -Item Construction (B+): Talented in the construction of magic items, but only those pertaining to onmyōdo. A skill she picked up from her ex-husband. -Territory Creation (A): Creation of a Shrine, which is superior to a Workshop, becomes possible. Personal Skills -Shapeshift (A+): Can freely assume a wide variety of forms ranging from beautiful women to 9 ft tall demons and even appear as multiple distinct entities, such as a procession of soldiers. Division decreases the stats of each body proportionally, while temporarily increasing stats by assuming different forms is possible. Increasing one stat at a time is fine but two or more begins to consume magical energy at the rate of a minor Noble Phantasm. -Divinity (C): The guardian kami of the land surrounding Shinoda Shrine, and one of Inari's divine foxes. -Curse Arts (EX): A Skill that signifies one as a practitioner of Curse Arts. This magecraft has roots in both the eastern and western worlds. Her style of Curse Arts is the Dakiniten methods. It includes methods to discern one's time of death and secret arts to obtain influence, such as methods to attain status and fortune (for men) and methods to gain the favor of influential individuals (for women). Unlike some other foxes, Kuzunoha has no qualms with cursing whoever looks at her funny. -Shikigami Manipulation Techniques (EX): Origami foldings can be manipulated freely. Whether to attack, defend, or even be combined as a dovetail for decoy, they can be morphed into various forms and used in many ways. Kuzunoha most often forms them into either bird-like projectiles or bladed melee weapons. A skill she picked up from her ex-husband. -Mystic Eyes (A+): As the mother of Japan’s greatest onmyōji and the source of most of his supernatural abilities, it is only natural that Kuzunoha would possess similar attributes. While Abe no Seimei purportedly possessed Mystic Eyes that allowed him to see “further than the future”, Kuzunoha’s Mystic Eyes are those that cannot help but dwell on the past. With them she can follow the world line of any person or object in her field of view and instantaneously trace it back to any point in time, discerning any and all relevant information. Because the vast volume of information easily overwhelms the mind of any sentient being, the ability serves more as a search function that picks out only the information Kuzunoha is looking for. Because of this minor yet fatal flaw, information that could be important can be lost if she is not specifically looking for it.
This does not necessarily allow her to instantly discern True Names or Noble Phantasms as her Mystic Eyes will only render information on a Servant’s present existence up to the point where they were summoned.
Noble Phantasms Name: Urami Kuzunoha Title: You May Find Me At Shinoda Shrine Rank: A Type: Personal Range: ∞ Targets: 1 Description: A translation of metaphorical emotional distance into literal physical distance, Kuzunoha's Noble Phantasm creates a Bounded Field encompassing the space of the original Shinoda Shrine (approx. 10m radius). While this Bounded Field is active, the distance between Kuzunoha and the world is considered "infinite". She is unreachable by all forms of attack and cannot make any attacks of her own. All words do not reach her, all light fades from the world. She becomes invincible but effectively blind and deaf so long as she remains inside the barrier. Used sparingly, this ability can allow her to take hits that would otherwise kill her head-on as well as make difficult escapes possible, but prolonged usage is extremely draining both mentally and physically, as Kuzunoha will slowly lose all sense of time and physical sensation as if in an extreme form of sensory deprivation. Only one thing can reach her in this state: the words of the poem she once left for her husband and child. When spoken aloud as an incantation, the latter half of this poem can forcibly deactivate the Bounded Field, while the first half activates it. While within her Shrine, the effective range of this Noble Phantasm extends to encompass the whole of her established territory, and prolonged use with backup from local leylines becomes possible. The ultimate annoying cheat strategy for campers who like to hide in their shells like turtles.
