The Doctor & Nurse
In collaboration with: [@dragonpiece]
---After the conference---
As Iris laid with Samuel, comforting him until he fell asleep. Iris started to sit up in bed, keeping a hand on Samuel's head. He must have tired out from the fight. Iris stayed there with him for a few minutes, lightly ruffling his hair. It felt dirty the same way it does after working out. Knowing him he was probably called to the fight in the middle of training with Tarak. I barely even know what happened. I only know about the pillar that Alan was producing. Iris played with Samuel's hair while she let it sink in what leaving her brother meant. It may have just been for the day but that was already too much. He had to run to a fight tired and concerned. Without me. he had to run there tired, concerned and weakened because of me. Thank God things went relatively smoothly. But so many things could have gone wrong and I wasn't there. The influx of guilt was starting to feel overwhelming to Iris. She had always been there during the war. If they were ever seperated she would tear through the battlefield to get to him. A part of her wanted to just say their was no way she could've known that their first day in the Bazaar would have been filled with conflict but they doesn't apply anymore. They are traitors to the Ascendency. Conflict should be expected daily. She let herself get comfortable. Start acting like she could have the life she wanted. Iris was usually insightful to her emotional state and how to exhibit control over her self. She could feel her control was slipping as the guilt was heavy. The discipline instilled in her from her time with the Ascendency kicked in as she shifted gears to be more solider like again. Well, I need to get going. I got to do injury reports on all the combatants who returned, Purge records on the deserters, get Klein and Jude registered in the system. Iris was fully out of bed and about to leave their room when she realized she should write a message for Samuel that she was heading off. Iris went to bump heads one more time before leaving. As she got close she could now smell something dreadful. Oh God Samuel is stinky. She changes her note to "I had to go, for your stench is stronger than my want to stay in bed. Love Iris." As she left the room Iris decided it might be best to bathe as well just in case Samuel's smell rubbed off on her. After a quick shower, Iris went to start expunging the records. She checked to see if Amy ever texted her back, no response yet, she must still be sleeping. I'll do my best to cover for her with Natasha when she wakes up. When Iris made it to the med bay she noticed the doctor was still out. It makes sense with how little sleep he got to finish our system. With Millard not being here, the tasks Iris could do were severely limited. She tied he hair back and started to do the physical tasks such as running to the bottom of the ship where the backup solid state drives were. A hassle considering the placement of them. She went through the files and started collecting anything that has the deserters names. They may have abandoned us but in case of our capture, they shouldn't be roped in by the documents carried on the ship.

Almost 2 hours after Iris started working, a loud blaring alarm resounds the metal walls of the infirmary, the alarm sounds as if a gong resounded and almost bounced off of the walls. As the storage closet door swings wide open as a tired-looking Millard steps out with what looks like a coffee mug as he takes a swig of it and looks around. His eyes land on Iris and looks surprised and says, "Oh damn. You're here early. What'cha get done while I was out?" As Millard walks over to where Iris was and starts grabbing the work she has done so he can look it over. Sure she hasn't worked under this kind of work before yet she seemed to have done some good work. Millard looks at the information and the documents as he waits for her response, maybe it is the situation at hand. The kids did get handed down a punishment, he was unsure what it was yet he didn't want to ask for the fact that it might be the thing bothering her. So if it comes up more fluidly then it'd make sense he would ask, but right now they need to work. Millard popping out of the supply closet was momentarily startling. She released a quick breath, as she looked to just double check it was Millard. As Millard started to look over her work, she pulled out the correct paperwork to prove to him that she had been down in the solid-state data storage room. While she finished up the form "I decided I would clean up and write up some of the reports," Iris leaned back in her chair as she pushed back to give Millard room. "I also went all the way down to the server room to grab the backup storage on the people that left." After finishing her short update to Millard, Iris stood up and stretched. Iris went over to the coffee machine to make her coffee. While sipping the hot coffee Iris looked back at Millard, "Was that nap enough to keep you going doctor?" Iris knew it was enough but hey this is office small talk. Millard was happy she had the initiative to get so much done before he got up to work. She ran down to get all the physical stuff and did the bulk work before he even got there. 'What a thoughtful girl', Millard was happy to have such a good and helpful assistant. Honestly it helped immensely that all the bulk was gone so he could more critical about the important stuff. Millard lightly pats Iris on the back before she gets up with a, "This is great work, thank you", as he gives her a smile. As she got up to get some coffee Millard began to get ready to look at the most important pieces, the data on what happened to everybody when the incident with Alan happened. He knew Alan would probably take up the bulk of his time so he put him towards the back of the list. Soon enough once Iris' coffee was done she started to make some small talk. Millard gave a slight chuckle and a, "Yeah, it'll be enough. How about you? How are you holding up with the punishment given out?" Millard thought right now might be a good time, after all, Iris seemed to have been in a decent mood. Iris watches Dr. Millard make his way to Alan's report. It was complicated considering that everything happened to him. To Iris's surprise, Millard asked her about their punishment. Iris rolled her eyes nonchalantly, "Honestly the punishment is pretty lax. It's not really a punishment. We just got to eat rations for the next few days. He says he is going to take out snacks but that's fine. You think you can hide my stash?" Iris gave Millard a cute smile, hoping he would. Honestly, if Joey tried to take her shit there will be retribution. Millard heard the punishment Joey handed out and he realized that it would affect him too, as he let out a sigh and a, "Fack!" Millard had realized that this punishment wasn't just idiotic as it looped in people literally not involved, but it also included himself, and Millard would not stand for this. As Iris spoke, it was made clear very quickly however that she wanted him to hide her snacks. Millard had a like for Iris, she was cute, helpful, and actually did work, unlike the other little Marines. He gave a small smile and a pat on the head as he said, "Of course, just grab me what you want me to hide, and then I'll make sure Joey won't find it". Millard knew Joey wouldn't find it, Millard has been the master of napping, to the point only one person can find him with some consistency, and that is Abaddon, the man who spent thousands of years figuring out how to nap. Iris was quite pleased knowing her precious snacks will survive the punishment Joey was planning. Iris made her way back to the work table, "I'll bring them by during lunch. I got the snacks in my and Amy's room. Maybe 200 credits worth or so, think you can handle that?" Iris grabbed the papers Millard finished approving and went to digitize them. After being digitized, Iris activated her molecular deconstruction spell and simply dropped the papers through the field. The paper broke down into something similar to sawdust while the ink went greasy. And the dye from the paper broke down into dozens of different ingredients. She tossed the remains into the incinerator to be extra cautious. Millard listened to Iris as she said she had around 200 credits worth of snacks, he wasn't sure how much that could really mean, mattering how she spent it could be a large crate to a decent-sized box. However, Millard knew how to hide almost anything in his area. Millard had modified the infirmary to such a degree that if need be he could have almost anything in here and no one would know. As Millard watched Iris digitize the paperwork and then deconstruct it all. He had always been curious how such magic could interact with other beings, what is considered a target? Who knows, but one thing is certain, it is useful. As Millard says as he swings his seat over so he can start analyzing the data they now had to compare it between the most current, to when they were in the fight and before it. Millard was going to start with all of the Star Marines present in the fight, he was worried that what happened might be a sad thing that might happen to Star Marines. So his worry was if the Kids might all start blowing up, so his worry right now is age. Millard went through each one and found nothing new about each Star Marine, each one had nothing new introduced to them during this time. Next came a quick look through the people who weren't in the fight, most had no change until it came to Amy, in one of the moments an extreme amount of brain activity happened as then now it is constantly going off in strange ways, almost as if she is in a constant fight. Millard looked over and realized something, Iris just said her and Amy's room. Millard thought for that moment, "Hey Iris, I think we need to check up on someone. Amy might be in some trouble". Millard stands up and starts heading over to Amy's room.

Iris was more doing the things that needed to be done for Millard. She was not a medical expert and didn't have enough time to be a combat medic to make that up with experience. Iris understood what Millard was doing and the tasks he gave himself can be pretty taxing to do for an entire crew. Iris kept looking back at her Omni-tool under the pretext that she was making sure no one paged for help, in reality, she was hoping Amy would text her. Oh well, I'll visit her during lunch and get her up before Joey has her cleaning the ship as punishment. The words that came out of Millard's mouth sent Iris into a cold sweat. Amy's in trouble? How? I was with her just a few hours ago! Iris took off to her room. She was sprinting, not knowing what Millard could have meant by his generic phrase. Millard took a quick run over with Iris, he was slower than the woman, yet kept up. However, he could feel the on-set on an idea that he knew could slowly creep up on him, him getting old. Uhhhh, damn it. Smoking doesn't seem to be helping this, oh no. I don't want to work out. However, Millard made it over, maybe moments after Iris, but not too far. However what was found was strange, Amy looked to be resting, yet Millard knew her brain waves were running wild. Millard looked over to Iris and through his heavy breathing he speaks out to her, "Iris grab Amy we need to bring her to the Infirmary". Millard knew he needed to think of what they needed to run to best test what was going on, as when he checked his Omni-tool, her brain activity was firing off like she was in an intense fight for her life. Iris was ready for most things that could be happening. A seizure, injury, a combatant in the room. Maybe a failure in the infrastructure of the room. But when she used her clearance to open Amy's door there was nothing that she could see. Amy was laying where she left her. Still breathing, still sleeping. Could the censors be wrong? Iris was trying to figure out what could be happening but she was freezing. But Millard gave orders to bring her to the infirmary. Iris quickly lifted Amy with her blanket still covering her and began to do a quick walk back to the infirmary. It could be brain damage and if that was the case Iris shouldn't bounce her. Iris's actions were calm and quick but her face told a different story. She looked mortified knowing something was going on that she couldn't see. Like there was a disconnect between her face and get actions. Once they arrived at the infirmary she gently laid Amy on one of the prepared beds. Waiting for Millard's instructions before proceeding. Millard was looking at his Omni tool the entire walk over. He was trying to figure out what was happening. Out of most people here, she was a mind mage, so something like this could be possible. Yet Millard has no clue what's happening, her race apparently can use mind magic, so for it to happen where her magic goes wild shouldn't be a thing, yet that could be the only thing happening. Nothing else is happening, her body isn't reacting in a wild manner, hell, even her physical body isn't even registering this, yet something is happening. Once they arrived at the infirmary Amy was set upon one of the beds as Millard asked Iris to start grabbing some equipment with him so they can start running more scans. Her bodily functions were fine, no, they weren't adjusting to the surroundings she was in, her body is cold, so unconsciously she should have rolled herself up in a blanket, but no, she laid there freezing. Millard thought of it as that means her brain might be focusing on more things, it might be taking her brainpower to just keep this illusionary 'fight'. Millard looked to Iris as he started to explain this, "Okay, so what is happening is that right now Amy has some very intense brain activity. This is the same amount of activity you'd see in an intense fight". Millard shows the machine to Iris as it shows Amy's brain glowing like an orangish-red Christmas light with constant yellow streaks like lightning going everywhere. It looks as if Amy's mind was going off like a thunderstorm. Millard sighed as he started looking through the other scans across her body, doing everything he can think of, and nothing is coming up. Nothing was wrong with the bones and spine, her nervous system seems like it is undamaged, hell even her brain stem was okay. Millard sighs as he continues to think of what else it could be. As he finally switches over to the Mana Reader, as then it showed what Millard feared, her mind seemed almost completely enraptured in this thick layer of mana that seems to constantly be fluxing back and forth and almost trying to explode but is constantly being held back. Millard sighs and says, "Her magic seems to be going wild". Millard puts his hand on Iris' shoulder as he says this, knowing she is probably going to be devastated by this. Iris tried to heal her but it seems this change that happened either occurred more than 4 hours ago or it's mind magic. Iris shuttered at the thought of this being Amy's own magic. She didn't even want to think about that possibility. But as Millard gently put his hand on her shoulder after pulling out the mana reader, Iris knew what was happening. This feeling of dread sunk into her heart. Iris knows what happens to people that have their magic go out of control. They die. It wasn't uncommon for star marines during training and early in the fighting for them to lose control of their magic killing them and their squad. Iris never saw what happened to someone with mind magic but she feared that Amy is gone now. Iris trembled slightly as her body remained stiff, trying to hold herself together. She was no stranger to these feelings but she always did everything she could to avoid them. But here Iris was, facing a situation she can't help in. Watching Amy get further and further away. Millard holds Iris for a moment as he lets her know he is here. He can't do much, magic is a fickle thing, yet he does have an idea to make sure Amy can survive this, it'll just require him to access something he was hoping to keep hidden. Millard patted Iris on the head as he moved to one of the walls and started to press against it and pull out his knife. He shoved it into the crack between 2 plates and pulled one of the panels off to reveal a safe. He then put in the code and pulled out a bar of Perfected Electrum as he says, "Alright, I have some Perfected Electrum, we can quickly make a helmet out of it, and it will take in the residual magic and ease her burden". Millard had no clue if it'd actually work, but whatever it took to ease Iris a little he'd lie to the Devil just to make sure she felt better right now. As he goes to his work table and starts forming the metal. Iris was trying to hold herself together but Millard's small act of kindness was enough to weaken Iris's hold on herself. Tears trickled out as Iris's cheeks went red from her intense emotion. Iris still didn't want to show Millard her weakness, she couldn't have someone see her like this. As she was about to move away from Millard, he went away on his own, showing as much compassion as Iris would have allowed at that moment. Once Millard left, Iris reached to hold Amy's hand. It was cold but Iris's hand was warming it up. However, the good doctor never stopped working. He pulled some perfected electrum it and started to fashion it into a helmet. Iris went over, hoping that Dr. Millard's intuition on this was right. Iris helped quickly form a helmet. Trying to make holes for the horns was difficult because of where they were versus where Iris remembered the old horns were. Eventually, they got there and rushed over to put the helmet on Amy. There wasn't an immediate physical change that Iris could tell so she liked to Millard to see what his devices were taking him. Millard lets out a sigh once the helmet was done, it didn't take too long for Iris to start helping him. He was happy she did, that meant that she was at least still there. Even if she didn't show her feelings fully to him, he didn't need to see it to know she is probably thankful. Once Millard went over to set the helmet upon Amy's head no immediate change could be seen, Millard didn't know it would even work in the first place, so he flicked through his scanners to see any change, most showed nothing as it should, but the moment of truth came when he flicked to the mana scanner. Once Millard switched to the mana scanner Amy's helmet seemed to have been lightly glowing an orange hue. A sigh almost escaped his mouth but he held it in and left a smile as he turned it so Iris could see and said, "See? The magic is being diffused and absorbed into the helmet so the burden is lessened upon Amy". Millard gave a light pat on the shoulder as he says, "Can you grab her some blankets while I prepare a stasis pod for her?". Millard heads off to the large wall panel that he put his hand on to open up a control panel, he starts putting in a few inputs as then a few minutes later another wall panel starts slowly coming out, and as it reveals a stasis pod. Millard makes his way back over once this is done and says, "Everything is ready, we should put her in", as he sets his hand upon Iris' shoulder. Iris felt a form of relief that the helmet worked. That relief was temporary though. There was no way to know when it even if she was going to wake up. Iris knew that but she secretly got her hopes up that if the helmet worked Amy would just wake up. Like it was just a bad dream. But that is not the case. She watched Millard head over to where the stasis pods were being kept. Iris knew it was proper protocol but she still didn't want it. Stasis is a last resort. The ship isn't staffed enough to manage a full-time patient and be ready for anything else that could happen. In the final moments before saying goodbye to Amy for now, Iris stood there, trying to figure out what she should do. Their relationship only recently budded but Iris knew Amy was one of the handfuls of people she cared about. Iris knew that Amy was special. And the thought of saying goodbye hurt too much. Iris gave into her last bit of optimism as she put on a smile, "See you when you wake up Amy." Iris slowly leaned down and have Amy what could be their last kiss. She didn't want to cry because if somehow Amy could hear this she wanted her last moments to be happy at least. Iris turned to Dr. Millard who had been waiting for her to say her goodbyes, "Thank you Doctor, let's get her into stasis." Iris picked up Amy, still smiling, and headed over to the pod. Millard watched as iris made her goodbyes, he saw her form a smile and mask the pain. She clung to hope, Millard didn't know how he should go about it, but all he could do was wear a smile. As once Iris picked Amy up Millard said with a smile, "Yeah", as once Iris placed Amy into the pod Millard gave a nod and slowly allowed the pod to close. He didn't have it go fully back into the wall, he knew that if iris could see Amy she would feel better, knowing that she is there, being able to see them is better than knowing they are just alright. Millard patted Iris on the shoulder one more time as he left to continue his work as he says, "I'll be continuing my work". As Millard left to his desk so he can continue his checks on the others. Iris truly appreciated Millard leaving Amy out for Iris to see her. At least then Iris could still feel that she was still there. When Millard said he had some work to do, she knew what he was doing. Iris said, "Yeah, I'm going to do an inventory check I'll be back in 30 minutes or so." Iris walked past Millard, grabbing her Omni-tool along the way. Iris made her way to the back of the storage room. She slowly slinked down to the ground as the weight of what just happened started to set in. First was her failure as a sister. Then Amy goes into a coma. The years started to slowly trickle out until eventually, Iris was fully breaking down. The tears made her shirt wet and she let out the cries of pain from what happened. All the while she was still fighting to regain composure. About an hour of sobbing went by before she came out of the closet. She used her magic to reset herself to before she cried. No redness, puffiness, no snot, nothing to indicate she had been crying except for the dampness near her collar. Iris went over to Millard with that upbeat professionalism and said, "Seems the inventory is all accounted for, how are the reports coming along?"

Millard let Iris do as she pleased, he knew she was going to need some time. This must have been her first, and that has to hurt, but there isn't all that much he can do. So he got to work looking through the others now. Most people during this entire time were fine, they were seeing combat, their temperature raised yet as he went through his work he realized something. Something was off as once Iris came out she seemed composed and ready as he knew he didn't want to drop this on her but they had no choice. Millard looked to Iris as he says, "Iris, I think we have a problem.", as the datapad in his hand seemed to be the one he is speaking of.
