The movements may be purposefully selected or freely improvised and have aesthetic and symbolic value above and beyond any work, travel, or survival purposes the movements may have. Dance is a powerful instinctive impulse, but the art of dance is that impulse channelled by skilful performers into something that becomes intensely expressive and that may delight spectators who feel no wish to dance themselves. Categories of Dance. Dance can be broadly split into performatory and participatory dance, although these two categories are not always completely separate. Performatory dance is intended primarily as a spectacle, usually a performance before an audience. It often tells a story, perhaps using mime, costume and scenery, or else it may simply interpret the musical accompaniment, which is often specially composed. Participatory dance, on the other hand, whether it be a folk dance, a social dance, a group dance such as a line, circle, chain or square dance, or a dance with a partner, is undertaken for its participatory aspect rather than for the sake of creating a spectacle for an audience. Participatory dancers often all employ the same movements and steps but it is also possible for vast crowds to engage in free uncoordinated dance. Function of Dance. People — and even certain higher animals — often dance as a way of releasing powerful feelings - joy, impatience, anger, grief. These motive forces can be seen not only in the spontaneous skipping, stamping, and jumping movements often performed in moments of intense emotion but also in the more formalised movements of dances such as tribal war dances or festive folk dances, which both generate and release emotion. Alongside emotional release, dance may have special functions, whether social, ceremonial, competitive, erotic, martial, or sacred and liturgical. Social acts like celebrations, courtship, recreation, and entertainment, and major events in a community may be reflected in dances: amongst other things, dances can be performed to mark births and deaths, weddings and wars, coronations and victories, journeys and festivals, and much else. They may impart cultural morals, including religious traditions and sexual standards; give vent to repressed emotions, such as grief; motivate community members to cooperate, whether fighting wars or grinding grain; and enact spiritual rituals. War dances, often using weapons and fighting movements, can be used as a way of training warriors and preparing them emotionally and spiritually for battle. People also dance for the pleasure of experiencing the body and one's environment in new and special ways. Dance movements tend to be organised into a spatial or rhythmic pattern, tracing lines or circles on the ground, following a certain order of steps, or conforming to a pattern of regular accents or stresses. These characteristics may produce a state of mind and body that is very different from that of everyday experience. The dance creates a very different perception of time and space for the dancer: time is marked by the rhythmic ordering of movement and by the duration of the dance, and space is organised around the paths along which the dancer travels or around the shapes made by the body. Power of Dance. For this reason, dance can create a completely self-contained world for dancers, in which they are capable of physical effort, prowess, and endurance far beyond their normal powers. An ecstatic dancer can whirl ecstatically for long stretches of time without appearing tired or giddy, and certain dancers may even be able to strike daggers against their naked chests without that causing apparent pain or injury. This transcendence of the everyday may also be experienced by the spectators. Drawn into the rhythms and patterns created by the dancer’s movements, they may begin to share in the emotions being expressed through them. Thus the performers and the spectators work themselves into a trance in order to transcend their ordinary selves and 'receive' the powers of the gods. The Feverfooted Goddess. While everyday dance has these qualities, Rosalind is able to harness the powers of dance in an especially concentrated manner. Those who behold a joyous dance may be inspired to euphoria, those who are subjected to a dance of wrath or grief may experience inexplicable fury or extreme forms of sadness (which may develop into depression if not attended to). In the hands of an unskilled practitioner, Rosalind's powers can prove lethal. As fate would have it, she is a horrific dancer. Mortals and divines are advised to run far far away if she loses control of her feet - or if there's even a hint that she plans to dance, really.

Persona
Excitable. Shy. Fearful. Caring. Hesitant. Self-deprecating. Conciliatory. Curious. Dramatic. Sloppy. Passionate. Honest. Idealistic. Insecure. Sentimental. Maternal. Self-conscious. Disorderly. Forgetful. Clumsy. Well-meaning. Curious by nature and full of wonder, Rosalind feeds her passion on novel experiences and sights. With every new experience that feeds and inspires the roiling dance-fever in her feet, she ventures ever closer to an explosive dance of leaps and twists and pirouettes, stomps and impassioned shouts, over which she has little control. The effects of such a frenzied flare-up are often terrible on beholders, who may swiftly find that the body, mind, and spirit can only handle so much joy, sorrow, anger, and fear before something gives. For this reason, Rosalind is by nature fearful - fearful of feeding her passions or bettering her dancing, and so is wont to retreat into her shell of clumsy forgetfulness to preclude the possibility of mastering her dancing or truly experiencing anything new. More than anything, she wishes she could rein in her passions and control them so that she will no longer have to exist as a ticking timebomb. Perhaps then she will be able to kick back, breathe a little, and give herself to the dance.
True Form
[sub]She is a Phantom of delight when first she gleams upon the sight; a lovely Apparition, sent to be a moment's ornament; her eyes as stars of Twilight fair; like Twilight's, too, her dusky hair; but all things else about her drawn from May-time and the cheerful dawn; a dancing Shape, an Image gay, to haunt, to startle, and way-lay. You'll see her upon nearer view, a Spirit, yet a Woman too! Her every motion light and free, and steps of virgin-liberty; a countenance in which do meet sweet records, promises as sweet; a Creature not too bright or good for human nature's daily food; for transient sorrows, simple wiles, praise, blame, love, kisses, tears, and smiles. And then you'll see with eye serene the very pulse of the machine; a Being breathing thoughtful breath, a Traveller between life and death; a perfect Woman, nobly planned, to warn, to comfort, and command; and yet a Spirit still, and bright with something of angelic light.[/sub] Rosalind's true form is not simply a form, but an act. As the living manifestation of dance, her true form is the dance itself, and so in the instance she surrenders herself to her feverish feet, or is overcome by them, behold her true form! This means that her true form has little bearing on her physical appearance, and while the dance is her true 'form' the fact remains that the form of the dance is infinitely varying - an impassioned love dance is not a war dance, nor the incessant tip-tapping of the folk dance the slow and measured ceremonial display. No, Rosalind's true form is the dance itself, and beyond that she is but a woman cursed by fate and burdened with the unenviable task of hosting a maddened dance-fever.
Musical Themes

1.
