The young dwarf stood on the doorway. Seconds stretching into eternity as he waited for an answer from the white haired winter beauty. His heart beat so hard on his chest that he could feel the rhythm of his heart in his ears like the war drums of his people. His big brown eyes stared at the fair face of the maiden as she sat on the bed eating her rations. The emotions he saw reflected on her icy blue eyes made his heart break. He had never seen a girl cry. Most dwarven women as strong willed, stubborn and ornery as their male counterparts. Seeing Rue tear up made him want to tear his own heart out. What made it worse was the realization that he had part in making those crystal like tears smear the snow white face of the fairy. How could he have been so selfish? War would make friends and family loose members. It did not need his help. Bowyn already seemed like he was carrying too much weight on his shoulders. Especially because of the loss of his wings. Rue needed a friend in this cruel world and he had made that friend blame her for trusting him. The dwarf shook his head as if to get rid of the guilt and foolishness he felt. All these emotions felt strange and overwhelming to him. It was easier to control them when surrounded by stoic dwarves who made drunken war. The din of battle silenced the voices in his head. Helping the wounded made him feel fulfilled. He had a rank and a place in the Legions. Away from them, who was he? The medic gritted his teeth. War was not a place to loose focus. He had made his mind to go after the eternal silence when he heard Rue speak. Yet, was she speaking to him? Her voice did not seem to be directed in his direction. At first Arn thought that Rue was trying to process out loud what had just happened but then his sharp eyes saw the intelligent glint in the wolf’s eyes when it looked in his direction. Was it suspicion he found in canine eyes? Was it judgment? The dwarf furrowed his brow. His thick eyebrows touching together like friendly forests. “…Arn shouldn’t be alone. I mean, that has to be horrible to find out right? We should give him a chance. Fool me once, shame on you and then twice on me. Isn’t that the saying?” Rue’s words made a lump stick in the young soldier’s throat. He tried to swallow a couple times but to no avail. A pit in his stomach was followed but a sort of warm feeling proceeding from his chest. He was a medic and he knew that what he was experiencing was only the physical manifestation of emotions. It had touched the dwarf’s heart that the lovely fairy had considered his feelings. She was right. Being alone felt horrible. What was worse is that he was going to walk out on Rue too and leave her alone. He could have punched himself. You don’t run from a fight. You hold your shield firm and brace you feet and grin. He had never resorted to violence. But fighting looked different for different people. “I am a damn medic. My job is to heal people. My job is to make them well. My job is to be there for them.” He took a deep breath almost in sync with Rue’s. ”That would be kind of you. Thank you. I want to find Bowyn, but I don’t want to leave you alone… I don’t know what to do. What if he doesn't come back? I.. I don't think this is your fault.” Her soft voice brought him back to the humble inn room. A slight smile appeared on his face. “She is brave.” He thought. “Two foolish males have a spat and this lovely lady has to pull our ears to make us behave.” His eyes held nothing but pride. He felt the need to be a better dwarf. Sometimes in war, a delicate flower growing amidst the corpses on a battle field remind you that there are things worth fighting for and protecting. Rue was definitely a worthy example of a beautiful crystal flower. His voice was gruff with emotion but he cleared his throat. “Miss Rue, lets search for Bowyn together.” He gave her as comforting as smile as he could muster in his awkwardness. “He needs you. I appreciate the sentiment but I did have some part to play.” Arn shrugged his thick shoulders. “There was much truth in what Bowyn said. It is hard to make allies if they can’t trust you. We can kill two birds with one stone, we may be able to find Bowyn and some dinner.” Like her, he only risked peeks when looking in her direction, quickly shifting his gaze if her eyes almost met hers. As if they were playing some sort of tag game. The dwarf followed just a half step behind. Both because her long slender legs and her urgency to find the winter fairy lad propelled her faster than his stubby legs could carry him and also because he did not feel worthy of walking directly by her side. He kept his eyes forward and lied to himself saying he did not look in her direction because he was focused on finding the white haired lad. It was hard for him to ignore how fidgety she was. Rue was worried for her friend and it made sense. "Do you mind if I fly?" The medic shook his head and gave her a slight smile. “No miss Rue, I think you may have a better vantage point. I will try to follow you from under her. I am not sure if the people of River Port are used to seeing a fairy in flight but it would not do for somebody to take too much of a liking to you. Me and Moonlight was it? could follow as best we can.” It was clear that the lady needed to clear her head and what better way to do that than being airborne. The medic gave the pretty fairy a confident nod. She needed to feel like she did not have to worry about him despite the emotions that played inside him.
