A twin, he has a sister Laura whom the family affectionately refer to as Lamb. As a part of the Callahan family (one of the founding families of the town), Clay grew up fairly comfortable financially, however emotionally his childhood was not so fulfilled. His father Sean was a yacht captain in Boston and spent most of the year out at sea so he didn’t really get a chance to spend time with his children. On the surface, it seemed like Lamb dealt with their fathers absence a lot better than Clay, she clung to her mother and the two became very close. The best young Clayton had was on the rare instances where his dad was home, they would watch cop shows together; it was really the only thing other than blood they shared. Throughout his school years, Clay was known for his dry and self deprecating sense of humour, a decent coping mechanism when suffering from chronic loneliness. It was this charm and overall goofiness which endeared him to a group of other young kids, his cousin Francis, Allison Davies, David and Jamie O’Hara as well as Russell Lord. As the years passed, this small group would evolve into Edenridge’s In crowd. Clay, Fran, Russ and David all joined the basketball team and ended up becoming stars in their own right. Whilst the other boys bought into their basketball hype, Clay shied away from the jock stereotype and became a friend to everyone. He was cool, affable and had an amazing head of hair, who wouldn’t want to be friends with him? Far from the perfect character he portrayed, the young man had his fair share of issues; most of which revolved around his family life. The first of these of course was his lack of a relationship with his father. Whenever he had a break from school, Clay would work on his fathers boat, partly to earn money but mostly to build some kind of rapport with him. Although he enjoyed working out at sea, there just didn’t seem to be enough between the two Costigan men that was worth anything. Clay’s mother had always been a space case, with her head in the clouds and her hands focusing on her artwork, there was very little in the way of a guiding hand during his childhood. Maybe that was why he gravitated towards his aunt and uncle, John and Edith. They welcomed Clay and treat him as well as they treat their own sons, Francis and Roddy. Lamb was an emotional whirlwind and despite being twins, she and Clay had very little to do with one another; they were just too different. In spite of his lackadaisical attitude to pretty much everything, Clay was an attentive student with a knack for problem and puzzle solving. He wasn’t afraid to score high on tests and put his utmost effort into everything he did. When Clay was young, he had already made the decision that he wanted to be a police officer; which was why when he graduated, he knew exactly what his plan was. After getting into and studying at Lowell University, he got a BA in Criminal Justice and he transferred to John Jay college. It was whilst he was here that he began to hear of all the horrors that his home town was going through. Clay was in class when he got a text from his Mom telling him about Charlie Decker’s massacre. He immediately rushed home but there was nothing he could do. It was in that moment that he decided that he didn’t just want to be a cop, he wanted to be a cop in Edenridge. After that, Clay finished out his degree before finally enrolling in the Boston Police Academy. Now having recently graduated and been accepted by the EPD, he has been assigned as the partner of Sylvester James, Edenridge’s own glorified hero cop. Clay has high hopes of learning with Sly but he is also under no illusions, he knows that the EPD is dirty and that his hometown is plagued with crime. He’s heading in with clear eyes and his finger on the trigger.
