You have memories of your past life to varying degrees but the one thing everyone shares is that they have no idea the events leading up to their arrival. Some say its random selection, others blame cosmic happenstance or interaction with something not originally from your world and of course there are people who say the Underynth is basically a sort of limbo/hell.
