Biography: James Graham was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to Clyde and Marie Graham. Clyde Graham, 66 was employed as a Chairman of the Scottish Land Court serving as a judge in Edinburgh until his retirement in 2015. He and his wife live on an estate north of Bathgate, Scotland. His father’s influence in Scottish Government enabled his appointment to the Britannia Royal Naval College in southeastern England. “Jimmy” Graham was commissioned in 2005 an Ensign as a Warfare Officer. He served aboard the HMS Gloucester as a gunnery officer during the same time period David Knight was the XO and then years later, as a Lieutenant Commander, he served again as the Combat Information Controller aboard the HMS York under Captain Knight. The two had an excellent relationship together which made Commander Graham an excellent choice to serve as his first officer. Jimmy Graham also served aboard the HMS Victory in Portsmouth harbor. The 18th / 19th century sailing ship was pride of the fleet more than 200 years ago and is the oldest commissioned ship in the world having been commissioned 244 years ago. The ship was Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Having an appreciation for history, James Graham loved his time aboard the Victory. He once toured the USS Constitution as part of an exchange program with the US Navy. The Victory may be the oldest commissioned ship in the world, but he Constitution is the oldest commissioned ship that is sailable. In 2007 while not on duty, and under the influence of alcohol, Lieutenant Graham stumbled from the port side of the ship after exiting the forward deckhouse. His absence from the deck was observed by crewmen who quickly alerted the bridge. The bridge officer on duty took immediate steps to bring the ship about and return Lieutenant Junior Grade Graham to the ship. Captain Knight was extremely upset and considered court martialing Mr. Graham but decided on an alternate punishment involving additional duty and an essay on dereliction of duty. Mr. Graham appreciated the captain’s punishment and learned about being more responsible for his actions and alcohol. James Graham loved his time in the Navy but wanted something less risky or more civilian. He wanted to do something that did not involve getting shot at or shooting at someone. When the opportunity to serve aboard a Merchant Navy arose, he jumped at the chance. Because he served two separate tours with Captain Knight he understands how the man things and believes in the expression, “better the devil you know than the devil you don't.” DRMs: Leadership: +3 Command / Management: +1 Naval Gunnery: +2 Perception: +2 Situational Awareness: +2 Navigation: +1 Vision: +1 Languages: Arabic: +1 Sailing: +1 Denial of alcohol temptation: -2 (Likes to drink) Diesel Engineering: +1 Physics: +2
