The first way, traditional writing method, opponent 1 throws a punch or a kick. opponent 2 defends the thrown punch and decides whether it lands or not. This method relies on honesty and integrity on the participants. The second way, gaming method, both writers agree on a method of determining advantages in rolling dice. I prefer to use the FATE dice systems simply because most of the outcomes are near average. Only during extreme (lucky/unlucky) situations do the dice favor or unfavor the person rolling the dice. Both writers designate certain abilities with Die Roll Modifiers (DRMs) to weight certain abilities.
