One of the many sons of Odin, Heimdallr was raised to bring glory not only to the Aesir but also to his father.  Being born of the Nine sea giant sisters and Odin, Heimdallr was blessed with a perception that was unmatched even amongst the best of the gods.  This along with his desire to please his father made him the perfect candidate to watch over the nine realms as its watchman.  And so for most of his life heimdallr remained at the entrance of the bifrost keeping his watchful eye ever vigilant. 

Heimdallr took his position very seriously as not only out of a sense of duty and honor, but also because of a deep desire to prove himself to his father Odin.  Because of this Heimdallr rarely left his position where the bifrost met the world tree as he waited for the end times.  As the sagas foretold, Heimdallr was distended to witness the marching of the giants led by the traitor Loki as they laid siege to Valhalla.  Heimdallr was to be the first line of defense and in a desperate attempt to stop Ragnarok, He would give his life in order to kill loki.

The fall struck deep with most of the gods who had lost their divinity, but it struck a special cord with Heimdall.  For all Heimdall was concerned he had failed in his duty to warn the Aesir of the passing of Ragnarok which he could only blame for the fall.  Not only had he failed in alerting the gods in time but worse so, he had survived the very event he was meant to die in.  True the other gods had survived the fall as well but Heimdall had grown up believing this was his destined death. 

After the realization finally sunk in, Heimdall was at a loss for what to do with himself.  His one purpose in life had been taken away from him in the fall, the only thing the fall had left him was his eyesight.  And so, with his one gift still intact Heimdall set out across the world observing the mortals.  For most of history he stuck to the shadows of civilization, always close enough to help should there be a need, but never close enough to be recognized.  His goal for the most part was to still watch over the mortals as best he could to regain some semblance of honor in his failure.  But he also hoped to see what kept the mortals moving forward.

In his quest to answer both of these questions Heimdall had lost contact with many of the other gods.  In those years he sadly never truly felt he found an answer or that his actions truly made up for his failures, but they were a start.  Heimdall had taken a liking however to helping the mortals where he could and thus found an easy home working as a detective.

Heimdall wishes to one day repay the debt of his failure and to answer the one question that still plague his mind.  Until that day comes however, he will settle with regaining his honor one action at a time.
