A piece of stale bread is a feast. A hard bed is a luxury. Rather than indulge himself, he would rather share his blessings with others. Like all followers of The Creator, Yalen has an unfaltering belief in the sanctity of life. Only the gods have the right to free a person from their mortal coil. Because of this belief, Yalen is a pacifist. The magic he was blessed with was not given for the sake of hurting others. Yalen is an easy person to talk to, even for complete strangers. He loves to hear other people's stories and learn about their passions and goals. Yalen also understands that people often suffer from inner turmoil. He is a patient listener and will try to guide others with the faith's teachings when they are feeling lost. He has a handsome, almost pretty face, with golden hair and dull blue eyes. His skin is pale due to time spent indoors, and he has little in the way of muscle mass. The robes of his religious order are rather ornate, but Yalen dresses modestly when he is not representing the monastery or the academy. All his personal clothing could fit in a single closet. Yalen has difficulty walking, and often has to wear supportive footwear and ankle bindings just to stay on his feet. He is better at reading and writing in Avincian than he is speaking it aloud.
T H E G I F T
Yalen was raised to be a Brother of Sunset and has no formal background in the magical arts. His gift was discovered by accident. The first manifestation of his gift occurred when he unknowingly used Arcane magic to create heat. Though this might be a problematic branch of magic for Yalen to explore given his low Mana capacity, he is a rare exception. This is because he has been afflicted by the Tethering. Yalen can draw and convert energy from most sources with exceptional speed and control without exceeding his limits. His adoptive father is an abbot with noble blood. When Yalen's gift was discovered, the abbot spent some time teaching him the basic foundations of magic. This way, Yalen could use his power without hurting himself or others. However, Yalen could only learn so much without a proper curriculum, and he still had to follow his daily routine as a monk in training. At his level he can grasp low difficulty Arcane magic. His average RAS score limits the amount of energy he can put into each spell, but he has his own strengths. The effects of the Tethering give him an edge over someone of comparable talent. He may also have a knack for other magic schools. Magical aptitudes: Arcane, Unknown
B A C K G R O U N D
Yalen is from Miatto, with his hometown being right on the border between Miatto and Perrence. When he was an infant, he was given up for adoption by his parents. He was taken in by a Dordian monastery inhabited by the Brothers of Sunset. Among their other charitable acts, the monks took care of orphans who were unwanted or had no-one to call family. The monastery provided the kids with shelter and a general education. Alongside their numbers and letters, the children read the manuscripts of the Quentic faith. Becoming a Brother of Sunset was not expected of them, but the clergy hoped to foster in the kids a love for The Creator and the other divine members of the Pentad. Yalen showed a rare enthusiasm for the holy words, always wanting to learn more about the scriptures and Oraff-Zept. When the other kids went to recess, he read the bible. Yalen's devotion moved Abbot Castel to the point of adopting him as his own child. Yalen was resolved to stay at the abbey and devote himself to the Dordian order. Yalen spent a great deal of his free time in the monastery's hospital. Under the guidance of his peers he cared for the sick and elderly. He visited each person every day to pray over them and offer words of comfort, and eventually he became an institution. During a particularly cold season, one of the older orphans fell deathly ill. She was a good friend to Yalen, and when he heard of her sickness he was immediately at her side. For a whole week he ate nothing and drank only sips of water. During this time of fasting, Yalen desperately pleaded to Oraff to spare her life. So fervently did he pray that a sudden change manifested within him. One night, when Yalen placed his hands upon her, a warmth filled her body that eased her pain and lulled her to sleep. The fever that was induced afterwards was enough to fight off her sickness. After that night, his brother monks began to call Yalen a blessed child. Abbot Castel was a man of god, but he was also an educated nobleman who possessed the Gift. He suspected that Yalen was awakening to his latent power and decided to have him examined by his peers. The results of the examination exposed Yalen as a budding wizard, but a dark omen appeared. The tests revealed that his Manas were affected by the condition known colloquially as the Tethering. Though the entire monastery shed tears for him, Yalen did not fall into despair. He did not see the diagnosis as a curse, but a test of his faith. His worship ever more fervent, he begged his father to teach him the ways of magic, believing that he could use his power in service of Oraff. Abbot Castel agreed to do so, and after teaching Yalen the basic principles he arranged for him to continue his education outside the monastery. The abbot called on a favor from a friend in the local merchant's guild, who graciously provided the funding and clout necessary to enroll Yalen in the prestigious academy.
M O T I V A T I O N
Using the time he has left, Yalen wants to master his gift so that it may be used for a higher purpose. After finishing his stay at the academy he plans to return to the monastery and finish his training as a Brother of Sunset. Yalen's condition gives him a greater appreciation for the life lent to him by his creator, and he hopes to shine a little light on the lives of others. Even though he finds himself in an unfamiliar environment, Yalen continues to follow the ways of his order. Outside of the academy's lessons, his daily behaviors are mostly unchanged. Yalen still wakes up earlier than required. He says his daily prayers. He tries his best to live virtuously and reflect on the holy scriptures. He has done his best to unite a monk's lifestyle with the life of a student of magic.
I N V E N T O R Y
Yalen's dormitory is a spartan affair. He has added very little to the furnishings provided by the academy. The only notable change he has made is the addition of a small shrine of Oraff, to which he prays and makes offerings of incense. He can afford more luxuries with the allowance he receives from Abbot Castel, but Yalen hardly spends it. Until recently he was sending almost all the money back, but his father insisted it was for his education. Yalen has a few personal items that he brought to the school with him. Foremost among these is an icon of the Brothers of Sunset gifted to him by a deacon from Miatto. It takes the shape of a half-sun hung on a golden chain. It acts as both a symbol of worship and a medium through which Yalen sometimes casts his spells. He also has a walking cane made of pearwood. Yalen is never seen anywhere without a book of scriptures, protected by a fine velvet covering. It is as much a security blanket for him as it is a subject of study.
