The start of her life was a touch-and-go situation as the first year of it was spent in the NICU at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. In the end, Celeste did pull through, and CPS took custody of her; thus, her life of bouncing from place to place began. As a child, she was sickly β€” having BPD (bronchopulmonary dysplasia), asthma, and also being completely deaf in her right ear and partially deaf in the other. All of her ailments made her a hassle it seemed for the caretakers she was placed with as she required extra care in comparison to a lot of the other children. This made her feel like a burden to those she was placed with. On top of that, she was often bullied by her peers for being different. Her childhood was bleak, to say the least in the beginning. It took thirteen years, but, eventually, Celeste found herself being placed into the care of Miranda Brandi. Her newly appointed social worker. What started off as her being fostered by Miranda ended with her being legally adopted two years later at the age of fifteen. Miranda was incredibly attentive to Celeste and her needs and made her unconditionally loved. For the most part, her mother did have her moments where she could get snappy and irritable but compared to where she came from Miranda was a breath of fresh air. Thanks to her new mother, Celeste got to learn ASL and was enrolled in a school specifically for hearing impaired children like her. She received tutors that helped her thrive academically and Miranda would pay for her to participate in anything that interested her. She wanted for nothing. Three years later, upon her graduation from high school got accepted into Columbia University's School of Nursing. She had grown up knowing that her mother was a type 1 diabetic and had helped Miranda stay on top of her health in her early teen years and wanted a career that would allow her to help others. Her grades had been so good that she had gotten a scholarship, along with several grants, and she was also able to receive some financial aid. However, even after all of that her tuition still wasn't covered in full and she refused to start pulling out loans as she didn't want to find herself in debt. So, she decided to get a job. Even though her mother was offering to help her pay her way through school. She wanted to do it on her own, not wanting to feel like she was being a leech or a burden to the woman that had already done so much for her. To her luck, she had been able to get a well-paying job as a live-in nanny for a wealthy couple situated in Carnegie Hill in Manhattan. The job was perfect β€” and she took it without hesitation. It was while living with this family as their nanny that Celeste would end up conceiving Janessa. She ended up being romantically involved in a three-year love affair with the father of the family employing her. It had started two years into her employment and wouldn't come to an end until Celeste ended up getting pregnant with Janessa. In the five years that Celeste lived in Manhattan whilst attending school at Columbia, Celeste and Miranda ended up having a falling out when Celeste spilled the beans about her being her married boss's mistress. However, when she got pregnant, Celeste was afraid that her soon-to-be baby daddy would force her into an abortion and ended up returning home to her mother. Following the birth of Janessa, Celeste let her mother did with her ex-lover as she didn't know how to face him after she had left him in the dark about her entire pregnancy. She'd hoped that her mother could convince him to be a part of their lives, or at least the very least Janessa's. He was a family man after all. But, it turned out he had no interest in being a part of their daughter's life. Preferring instead to cut them a check and sign over his parental rights. After things were sorted, Celeste wanted to get out of New York and her mother was supportive enough to move with her. They ended up choosing to settle in Signal Hill, California buying a nice single-family home in the area. She finished her education at Stanbridge University and would end up being a Head Nurse at the MemorialCare in Long Beach before her death.
Miranda Brandi [sub]Grandmother | Deceased (Insulin Overdose) | 51[/sub]
Miranda had never planned on being a mother; she'd always been more career-driven than family-driven in life. And, given the career path she'd chosen for herself as a child social worker, she had so many kids coming in and out of her life that she never felt the desire to have any of her own. This all changed for Miranda when Celeste found her way into her life. What was meant to be a temporary foster situation, became a legal adoption two years into the young teen living with her. While on the surface, this seemed like β€” and on many levels was a good thing; Miranda had both mental and physical health issues. In her earlier teens, Miranda had been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. At the age of nineteen, she'd been borderline personality disorder; which was the source of the complications that followed. Celeste became to Miranda what is known in the BPD community as a "favorite person". Celeste became the person Miranda filtered her world around, her source of comfort β€” her everything. She quickly became emotionally dependent on Celeste and devoted the majority of her time and day to fulfilling her every need or desire. Given that she had stepped up to be the girl's mother, initially wasn't an issue as Celeste had been greatly neglected during her time in the welfare system and needed a great deal of aid and services. Miranda pulled strings to get Celeste into the Lexington School for the Deaf so she could be around children like her. Spent hours learning ASL alongside her daughter to make sure that in the event that Celeste ever lost her hearing completely they'd still be able to communicate as fluently as they did with their spoken words. Whenever Celeste wanted anything Miranda would move heaven and earth to see that Celeste got what she wanted and everything was perfect. Until Celeste graduated high school and started making plans for her future; a future that didn't revolve around her mother. Miranda had this point had a well-established co-dependent relationship with her daughter. She struggled when Celeste left their home and Queens to attend college and live in Manhattan. Her struggle to cope with the distance only intensified when the two would get into a huge fight years later due to Celeste becoming the mistress of her boss. Years spent fearing that their physical distance would cause her daughter to abandon her and their relationship; Celeste cut her mother off. Stopped returning phone calls. Wouldn't text. Never visited. This went on for years. Miranda couldn't cope with the separation and her health and work suffered because of it. Without Celeste there to give her a reason to care for herself she stopped. And as a result, she developed a foot ulcer on her right foot and advanced diabetic retinopathy in her left eye. Fortunately for her, things didn't work out in the big city for Celeste and she ended up coming back home. And she didn't return alone as she came back into her mother's life with a rising bun in her oven. The two reconciled, to Miranda's glee, and with her daughter and a future grandbaby on the way; she made her health a priority to make she would be able to care for her growing family to the best of her ability. Once Janessa was born, Miranda didn't waste any time getting in contact with Celeste's former employer and baby's father. She knew that her daughter wanted to reconnect with the man and potentially get him to be a part of her and their child's life, but Miranda couldn't let that happen. She had just gotten Celeste's back. She wouldn't be losing her again. Especially not to an adultery who didn't respect her beloved daughter enough to not make her a mistress and now mother of a bastard child. She threatened litigation against him want she got an audience with him. She was going to make Celeste sue him for abuse of power, sexual coercion, and child support. She promised to make it a smear campaign that he'd never recover from. Unless he compensated their family. Not just Celeste. Or Janessa. But, the entire family. The man was wealthy; holding a position as a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. What Miranda was asking for wouldn't ruin him, but what she was threatening to do if he didn't would. His career. Marriage. Family. The life he had wasn't perfect, but it was something. Something he wasn't going to risk losing, for the promise of nothing. And given the picture, Miranda painted with her words Celeste wanted little more from him than a hefty check. He wanted to be a part of Janessa's life, but if he couldn't be physically involved he wanted to make sure she would be financially set without question. Ultimately, Miranda got the financial compensation that she had gone into the verbal confrontation looking for. Along with getting him to agree to signing over his parental rights and never contacting Celeste again. When she went back to Celeste and told her how the exchange had gone she painted her daughter's ex-lover in a negative light. Made it seem as if he wanted no parts of either Celeste or his newborn daughter. Making it clear that he would be signing over his rights and cutting them a check for millions in exchange for them never contacting them again. Going as far as having a fake NDA drawn up made it seem as if the family could never mention who he was to anyone β€” including Janessa in the future. This hurt Celeste greatly, but Miranda convinced her that the option she presented her with was the best offer she'd be given. Plus, in the event that she refused his terms, she made it seem like he'd probably try to sue them for custody and take Janessa away from them. So, Celeste conceded and once his rights were terminated outside of the public eye and money paid; the Brandi family relocated to California for a fresh start. One involves starting my own tattoo and piercing shop. Obviously, just by looking at me, it's clear that I have a thing for bothβ€”and according to my art teacher I have something of an artistic talent. There's a school in Louisiana called World’s Only Tattoo School, they have a bunch of different workshops to teach people how to do permanent make-up, tattoo, and pierce people. It would take a matter of months to go through all the different shops that they offer and then I'd come back to Cali and start up my own thing. Another idea I have in mind is going to the Long Beach Bartending School. Bartending seems like something that could be fun. Maybe move down to Vegas or New York. I don't know. Lastly, I've also been considering becoming a masseuse. That also sounds like it could be a bit fun . . . at the very least, I'll be getting paid to rub oil on some, hopefully, attractive people. The National Holistic Institute has a campus in Studio City that's about twenty minutes from my place in San Marino. I haven't decided on anything, but . . . I've thought up some options.[/sub] And, apparently, my nonna was as much in the dark about it all as I was. The only thing I ever got out of my mom about my dad was that they crossed paths when she was attending uni in New York. According to her, they weren't in a relationship when she told him she was pregnant, and for likely that reason and many more he just opted out of fatherhood. I guess I should just be thankful he didn't end up pressuring her into aborting me. I don't think I'll ever end up meeting the guy. It's been eighteen years. If he was ever going to have a change of heart on the whole idea of fatherhood it would have probably happened by now.[/sub] β—‹ Career Mom/Caretaker Grandmother; [sub]As a kid, I remember spending the majority of my time with my nonna. My mom worked. My nonna was retired, which meant she had all the time in the world to look after me while my mom was striving to be the best career woman she could be. Being a nurse and all, my mom's hours used to be all over the place and I never knew when she would be coming or going; but, nonna was always there. And, my ma was there when she could be.[/sub] β—‹ Newcomb Academy; [sub]Outside of Delbrook, Oxford is the only other school I've been to. At Newcomb, they teach from kindergarten to the eighth grade, so I got to go to one school for both elementary and middle school. Academically, I peaked in the fifth grade. From the fifth grade back, I was always at the top of my class. Honor roll. All those pointless certificates and stupid ass medals; I got those as a kid. And as busy as my mom was with work, every report card or "big" project she and my nonna would take me to Disney as a reward for getting good grades. For the smaller shit, like passing a test or getting a good progress report; my nonna would take me to Knott's Berry from sunup to sundown. My mom typically wasn't around for the farm days, but everyone once in a while she'd be able to come with us. Good times.[/sub] β—‹ Foster Kids; [sub]I had to be either six or seven years old when my nonna told me that she wasn't my mom's bio-mom. She hadn't done it to be malicious or anything, she was trying to get me to understand the whole foster care system because when she had told me that there would be random kids coming to live with us the first time around I had been really confused. In her mind, I think I was supposed to bring out my empathic side or help me see the whole situation as a good thing because fostering my mom is how she ended up becoming my mom's mom. But, it didn't really go how I think she saw it playing out in her head as I very vividly remember her words causing me to have a full-blown panic attack. She ended up having to take me to the hospital where my mom worked and . . . it was just a whole big thing. Like, baby Nessa was out here connecting dots. As far as I was concerned, I was about to be replaced by some random kid. My dad had already decided he didn't want me. My mom's "real" mom had thought the same thing about her which meant that she could totally come to feel the same way about me. My nonna, apparently, had a sea of better options to swap me out for if she ever got tired of me. Yeah, I wasn't happy. Initially, although a few weeks after my melodramatic ass meltdown, once we actually started fostering kids; I grew to love it. The kids we took in were always around my age which meant I basically got to have a play sibling here and there. And the more they came and went, the less I worried about getting the boot. I mean, I clearly had OG status. Which meant if they hadn't gotten rid of me yet, they weren't about to.[/sub] β—‹ The Big Apple; [sub]Every year, after I started at Newcomb, my family would go to New York for Christmas Break. We'd go to the Rockefeller Center to see the giant Christmas tree, ice skate at the rink, and shop. The hotel was always an adventure within itself, getting to order room service and run amok throughout the hotel, and I would even get to meet a bunch of my mom's college friends back then. Of course, any guy she introduced me to back then would instantly become an instant suspect on my long-lost father list. She'd always say no, but it didn't stop my imagination.[/sub] Preadolescence Years { 11 - 13 yrs. } β—‹ Death of Mother ; [sub]First year of middle school at Newcomb and my mom dies. I was eleven and some day-drinking asshole was at fault. He hit her while she was on her way home from work after working the night shift. Of course, he survived. Somehow, it always ends up being the idiot at fault that ends up walking away from situations like this. My memories from around this time are pretty muddled. Along with my recollection of the following few years. I don't know. Times just seemingly folded in on itself. All of the days, weeks and months just bled together. After the funeral, my nonna rarely left her bed. I had to learn how to cook for us because she stopped. The only time she'd ever really leave the house is when I made up an excuse and begged her to. We didn't celebrate things like birthdays or holidays. No more Christmases in New York. She stopped fostering kids, so I lost out on my play siblings. Things were never the same after my mom died.[/sub] β—‹ Grandmother's Health Declines; [sub]I'm pretty sure I was twelve when I first started to realize my nonna was sick. She'd always had issues; bad vision and some difficulty walking due to a foot surgery she'd had before I was even born. But, she ended up collapsing one day while we were out shopping for . . . something I can't even recall, but that incident is when I ended up getting the full rundown of how bad her health truly was. It turned out what ended up putting her in the hospital was an unstable angina. I tried to start cooking better meals for us. Sneak her medication into her food and drinks when I could. But, in the end, her health only got worse and she ended up getting diagnosed with kidney failure a year later and being placed on dialysis.[/sub] β—‹ Oxford Preparatory Academy; [sub]Between grades six to eight my grades plummeted. My teachers were overly lenient with me because of my mom's death and nonna's failing health. Any and all friends I had made in my earlier years at Oxford slowly pulled away from me those last three years. Not that I can blame them. I wasn't exactly chipper back then. If it wasn't for the pity of my teachers and my previously pristine record as an honor student, I probably wouldn't have been allowed to graduate from Newcomb Academy.[/sub] β—‹ Started Self-Medicating; [sub]The first drug I ever took was Vicodin. My nonna had been prescribed a bunch of different meds that she wasn't making use of. Outside of when I was forcing it on her by sneaking it into her meals and drinks. I was bored. It was the Christmas. I decided to Google what all of her different medications were for as up until that point I was pretty ignorant of what exactly I had been giving her. I just knew that her doctors had said that she had needed it so when I could get her to take it I would. Anyways, according to my quick Google search, Vicodin was a pain reliever and I was craving some kind of relief . . . or maybe more so a release. I don't know. It doesn't really matter. The point is . . . I started dabbling with things when I was thirteen. I think I also started taking my nonna's card and buying liquor online around this time. I was pretty lucky that the deliveries never required a signature and that my nonna rarely left her room. I didn't have to sneak or stash it. It was all just . . . really easy.[/sub] β—‹ Emancipation Research; [sub]The fact that my nonna needed dialysis meant that she was in the end stage of kidney failure when I was thirteen. Somewhere between the drinking, getting high, and feeling like I had to fight with her to get her to do the bare minimum regarding her own health care; I accepted the fact that my nonna would be kicking the bucket sooner as opposed to later. My ma's death had broken something in her that I couldn't repair. As much time, effort, and energy as I felt I was exerting in dragging her to the metaphorical riverβ€”she just wouldn't drink. You know? And, once I realized that she was going to fight to stay, I had to start preparing for the day that she would leave. This is what got me looking into getting emancipated. I knew that if she were to die on me before I turned eighteen, I'd be seized by the government and I didn't want that for myself. So, I had to find alternatives and with no other family to speak ofβ€”emancipation was my only option. Unfortunately for me, you have to be at least fourteen years old before you can go before a judge and petition for emancipation. However, that didn't stop me from starting to get my ducks in a row. One of the things that I quickly found out was that I was going to need was my nonna's permission. Which, right off the bat I knew was going to be a problem, because if she ended up telling a judge she had a problem with me moving outβ€”my plans would be dead in the water before they even got up off the ground. I waited until the day I graduated from Newcomb to broach the subject with her and . . . well, of course, she flipped her shit. Which led to me flipping my shit. And, me flipping my shit, turned into me word vomiting out everything; the drinking, getting high off the Vicodin I'd been stealing from herβ€”not that she'd even noticed although I had been doing it for months at that point. Ultimately, I just ended up making it very clear to her that I was fine with her kickin' the bucket if that was really what she was set on doing but I wasn't about to end up in a group home or some shit like that because she was too fuckin' selfish to stick around for me. Either I was going to be getting emancipated or following her to the other side. Those were her options. It was negotiable. She got the fuck on board after that. She tried to tell me that I would have to go to rehab in order for me to "get her blessing", but I wasn't an addict then or now so I obviously said no to that. We reached a compromise in the end; I'd go to therapy and she'd get a home health aide. She claimed she was agreeing to the aide because she was going to start taking her health seriously, but I knew it was really because she no longer trusted me to be in charge of her meds. It didn't matter to me either way. After taking care of her for three years [s]and failing at it[/s], I didn't care why she finally agreed to get a professional in the house; I was just glad that she did.[/sub] Teenage Years { 14 to Present } β—‹ Emancipation; [sub]The process was longer than I had anticipated, but after over a year of fighting for it; a judge did emancipate me. During that time, I had to pull up my grades. As failing wasn't going to convince the judge that I could be responsible for myself and I definitely couldn't pass the GED test. I got a job; as I had to show that I both had a legal source of income and could handle managing my own money. It took me a really long time to find somewhere that would employ me as everywhere I was going people wanted you to be at least sixteen to even apply. Fortunately for me, one of my old play siblings had a family member who was a manager at the Chick-fil-A by my nonna's house and hooked me up with a job. I had to "move out" of my nonna's house and ended up "renting" out the basement in my nonna's health aide's home. In truth, I didn't really move out, but we had to make it look like I had. So, we went through this whole process of drawing up a lease online, getting it notarized, and buying a receipt book off of Amazon to show that I was being a responsible tenant and handling my business. And, my nonna helped me convince the judge that emancipation was in my best interest; after forcing me to actually go through with the whole therapy thing. It turned out to be a huge waste of time in the end, but a few wasted hours were worth not becoming a ward of the state.[/sub] β—‹ Grandma Dies; [sub]I became legally emancipated in the fall of my sophomore year at Delbrook. During that year's Christmas Break, my nonna convinced me that I should go to New York for Christmas and New Year's. I hadn't been since my mother died and she said that me getting emancipated was the start of a new chapter in my life and I should celebrate it. She claimed because she couldn't miss a dialysis session she couldn't come with me, but she didn't want that to stop me from living my life and enjoying myself. I wish I could say that she really had to twist my arm to get me to go, but, she hadn't. Snowy Christmases in New York were one of the things I had really missed since my mother's death and the nostalgia of it all was too enticing to pass up. The last time I spoke to her before she died was on Christmas morning. She'd called to wish me a Merry Christmas, told me how proud she was of me, and apologized for failing me as a grandmother. We talked for hours that day and cried through the majority of that conversation. When I got back to California after New Year's, her aide was there at the airport to get me, and . . . she was the one that told me that my nonna had passed. Apparently, my nonna had lied to her aide and told her she was coming with me to New York and had set up for her to get her dialysis at another hospital in the city. So, thinking that she was with me, the aide never went by the house. I had gone to the airport straight from school after our last day of class before the break and didn't come back until the day after New Year's. She had gone almost a full two weeks without going to any of her dialysis sessions. Not going for her dialysis killed her. And, knowing that she had orchestrated it all . . . I don't want to talk about it anymore.[/sub] β—‹ Moves Out of Lake Forest; [sub]I needed a fresh start after sophomore year.
