while Joker wasn't Joker yet but actually a well-known public figure coming from an immense fortune of old money who's CEO of some corp in Gotham, gifted the position by dear old daddy who has since died, and his detached-from-reality position/status plus a little bit of the inherent sociopathy of men like them makes him take Batman's targeted assault on the systems that prop him up very, very badly, until it all comes crashing down and his narcissism prevents him from seeing it as retribution but instead all his rightful property/wealth being stripped away, and then combined with general public reception being very positive to his empire crumbling he sees it all as a horrible nasty joke being played on him and him alone, and then he cracks and decides if it's all a joke he'll play along

so you have this mystery, no-funds batman with no clear origin and the idea that really he could be anybody who'd had 1 bad day and decided to do something about it

and this very well-documented origin Joker who's come from the insane Bruce Wayne kind of money and lost everything 'dear' to him (money and power, rather than parents) and reacts in the only way that makes sense to him (by becoming an insane clown hellbent on wreaking revenge on the city that 'wronged' him, and particularly the Batman who was the catalyst and in this setting may as well be Gotham incarnate come to reclaim itself)[/hider]
