Respect from fear isn't worth having, Stella. And what happened in the past is irrelevant. What matters is the future. Not what your mom and I have done, but what you and your siblings are going to do. What we'll all do together. You earn respect by following conventions people make. Is that what we should do? Follow along like everyone else just so they'll like us? Or should we do our own thing and not care what they think?
