Why is it that introducing yourself to a new group there's an air of apprehension and awkwardness?

Granted, that's a rhetorical question, but here we are. You're reading this and I'm trying not to internally freak out about it. I came on by here to fulfill an itch for RP that I can't quite get scratched anywhere else. I'm in my early 30s, a male, and prefer what's called here as 'Advanced' RP. I don't need a novel in a reply, unless that's what you're into, but a handful of paragraphs would be nice. It's supposed to be an adventure anyways!
