Though his life has been marked by several major events, he’s always done his best to conquer so-called ‘fate’. While he is sometimes haunted by the past, he is intent in his focus on the future. Losses may cause him to become vengeful or melancholy, but he is resolved not to get shackled by what he cannot change. Due to this, Theo is perhaps a bit too willing to make sacrifices if he believes they will serve his goals. His self-assurance had long since been tempered by cautiousness, but he is still more than willing to take on high-risk high-reward gambles. He prefers to learn from his mistakes than stew in resentment. Besides, overcoming failures has worked wonders for his resilience. Due to his mercenary background, he is comfortable with employing force to get what he wants. Theodor isn’t a simple brute, however, and if a situation requires cunning, charm, or deceit, he’ll do his damnedest to employ whatever is necessary. He has little honour to spare for his enemies, and while he doesn’t condone pointless bullying of the weak, he’s very calculating about when and why to save someone he isn’t beholden to. He is occasionally moved by impulse, but even then, he can turn the results of his actions to his benefit. Though he has a grim exterior, and is often serious, there are moments indicative of his yet youthful spirit. He is curious, enjoys exploration, and can even get playful with those he’s close to. While he’s superficially personable, there are few others he feels truly connected to on a deeper level. His childhood was peaceful and happy. Whenever his father traveled for business, Theo accompanied him. He took advantage of his station in life, absorbing all knowledge eagerly. He was certain he could be even more successful than his father. However, misfortune struck when his mother succumbed to an illness and died. His father was so devastated that when his in-laws arrived to demand ‘reparation’, he easily gave in. Theodor was furious, but used what remained to take over as a merchant in his father’s stead. However, the combination of his young age, inexperience, political plotting from his relatives, sabotage from rival merchants, various beaurocratic obstacles, and his father’s drunken belligerence proved difficult to overcome. In the end, it was his father who decided to cut their losses and sold the business to someone else. On the one hand, Theodor knew that with a dearth of allies, continuing out of sheer stubbornness would have likely been futile. On the other, he felt his father had been too quick to give up. Bitterness festered in him; at his father, for destroying his prospects for a well-to-do future; at himself, for being equally weak. He did not want his hatred to overcome him until he became all too similar to that old man of his. Thus, he decided to strike it out on his own, leaving his father behind. After a string of odd jobs while wandering, he joined a mercenary company. Skirmishes had been on the rise, and so was the anticipation for war, which made it prime time for becoming a sell-sword. The war, once it begun, was akin to a wildfire; ferocious and quick to spread, free to ravage the lands with no attempts to stop it – only to perpetuate it. The struggle for survival and victory completely overtook his life. But though it seemed as if it might stretch into eternity while living moment to moment, battle to battle, the war did come to an end. Adjusting to peace was…unusual. He, as one of the captains of the company, and a few of the men he was closest to went their own way, offering their services to whoever would have them. It wasn’t bad, and he was content, but he felt like he lacked purpose. Managing his group’s finances, forging connections with potential customers, and so on, brought to mind his early childhood conviction that he’d be a merchant. It was as good a goal as any. With a mind to making greater profits, he and his men begun accepting more perilous missions. One of them was to Arocuria. It was also their last one. It was their first or second night in the kingdom’s territory, and they were ambushed by vampire scouts. It was a valiant attempt at a battle, but truly, it was more akin to a massacre. Certain he would die, Theo determined to at least take down one of his enemies. That didn’t happen, but he did ‘earn’ the honour of being captured and turned. It was a radical change in his life (or unlife, as it was), and took several years to adjust to. Since then, he’s formed a new ambition; rooting out the heart of corruption in Arocuria – the Vahidovs. Ever since he’s set on this goal, he’s been gathering information, procuring resources, building alliances. It remains to be seen whether his dream will be realized this time…

》 PERSONAL EFFECTS

A broadsword.
