Before the cycle of day and night began, the goddess of the sun, Amaterasu, was tied to the goddess of the moon, Tsukyomi. They ruled over their domain together, and their union was as strong as could be and they were bound in marriage. Years passed, and it seemed things would be perfect forever. Though Tsukiyomi was undeniably filled with more fire than her wife, Amaterasu believed she could keep the Moon under control. One day, this belief was completely shattered; and with it, all the love Amaterasu had held for her other half.

When Uke Mochi,  the Goddess of Food, invited Amaterasu to a feast, she was unable to go - busy watching over her younger brother, and sent her wife in her place. Though the food undeniably looked delicious, Tsukiyomi was disgusted by the way it was prepared, and killed Uke Mochi where she stood. Believing her wife would be satisfied with what she’d done, Tsukiyomi returned home to proudly tell her tale. Amaterasu’s reaction could not have been further from what Tsukiyomi had expected.

Amaterasu banished the moon, and moved to another place in the sky. Their marriage had ended, and Tsukiyomi was doomed to forever chase after that which she could not have - and thus the moon began its eternal cycle of chasing after the sun.

The treachery of Tsukiyomi did not end there. Shortly after the divorce, Tsukiyomi turned Amaterasu’s younger brother against her, and Susanoo’s anger at his sister’s supposed betrayal led him to destroy the rice fields of Amaterasu's lands, kill her livestock, and wreak havoc in every way possible. After this outburst, it took all of the sizable self-control the Sun goddess had to not destroy her brother. Not wanting her people to see her in such an emotional state, she locked herself in a cave, and magically sealed the door.

The world was plunged into darkness without its sun, and for better or worse, Tsukiyomi seemed to have 'won.' This darkness lasted only a short amount of time, before the clever goddess Ame no Uzume hatched a clever ploy to bring the light of the sun back to the world. She simply threw a party outside the cave for the other gods, and Amaterasu - somewhat self-centered - could not begin to understand why they could be so joyous and happy without her, the sun.

For only a moment, she poked her head out of the cave and found herself face-to- face with a new god. Was this the reason they were so happy? She wondered, and she stepped out to get a better look. Before she realized what had happened, the cave was closed behind her and Amaterasuwas back where she belonged: with her peers. And then, she realized what had happened: the clever Uzume had played a prank on her, holding up a mirror in front of the cave. The goddess that Amaterasu had thought was new was simply her own reflection.

Since that day, it is said that Amaterasu and her precious Uzume-chan have been inseparable. [/sup][/color][/indent][/hider][/center]

Though she’s never admitted it to anyone - not even Uzume-chan - the strongest emotion she felt was sadness. It wasn’t sadness at her lost divinity, but instead sadness at the loss of the mortal’s worship.

This feeling did not last long. It was only shortly after the fall that the Imperial family of Japan rose to power, claiming that their lineage could be traced back to the Goddess herself. Whether or not that was true was irrelevant; Amaterasu watched her name and her legacy be dragged through the dirt for years, then decades, then centuries. It was foul, and all she could do was watch in disgust. If she had told them the truth, would they have believed her?

For sometime, Amaterasu - now known as Kyōko Kurosawa served as a shrine maiden; the shrine she was the caretaker of for some time was a shrine to both herself and Tsukiyomi, a bittersweet iron that was not lost on the once all powerful goddess. As interest in the shrine dwindled, she found other things to do with her time, though it was never allowed to deteriorate or decline. To her, the shrine served a mighty purpose. A reminder of what she once was, and would one day hopefully be again.

And Kyōko used her time, forever endless so long as she ate the fruit once a year, well. Like any self-respecting person with infinite time, she had built up quite a surplus of funds by the time the 40s had come. It was at the end of that decade, with the end of World War 2, that Kyōko decided she had watched from the sidelines long enough.

Using her immense fortune, she purchased a not insignificant chunk of real estate in Tokyo, which she turned into a central hub for what she hoped would be at the forefront of the future of humanity. Vain as it was, she had been convinced that without her, humanity would be doomed to repeat what she’d seen happen time and time again. The business she built over the next 80 or so years focuses on technological advancements for mankind; anything from medical science, to communications. Ran by the Kurosawa family, no one has ever thought to ask how the matriarch always looks the same.

Once a year, every year, Kyōko takes a vacation to go and eat the fruit. Every year, she tells herself that this year, she’ll help them find peace - and this will be the last time she eats the fruit.
